• Ancient printer dying

From Sara Merriman@21:1/5 to All on Fri Jun 14 14:29:28 2024
The dreaded B200 error has come up on my printer. It's a Canon Pixma MG5350 from the mists of time. I've changed all the inks ti clear the printhead, switched it off and removed power cable. The driver isn't accepted by Air (sonoma 14.5)

I am doing my nut in trying to find a replacement printer/scanner/copier that works over wifi.

The one's I've seen are either:
refilled with a black and a single all-colour cartridge rather than each separate colour
only able to print photos at 5 x 7 rather than A4
don't print to the edge without a margin
have no installed paper tray, paper has to be added to a rear-tray by hand
    aren't auto-duplex

Anyone have a multifunction that doesn't have those annoyances they can recommend? Or know of another driver?

    Sa.

I've got an Epson XP-970 A3 photo printer, which does all of the above
except duplex. I'm using refillable cartridges with Epson bottle ink (maybe 1-2% of the cost of Epson cartridges) but the printer often decides one of
the six is empty halfway through a photo and to stop printing, wasting the photo paper (TBF photos do drink the ink and the carts are only 8ml each,
and it does this with the genuine ones too).

The solution to that problem is 'chipless' firmware:
    https://inkchip.net/
and then it'll always think the ink is full and never stop, eg use it with a continuous ink system. However chipless supports the XP-960 but not 970.

If you don't need quality photos, have you considered a laser? Brother are least annoying in terms of having cheap third party consumables.

My second son and my daughter have both recently bought printers that probably meet your specifications, but they are rather pricey. They use refillable ink tanks, not cartridges and can print double sided. They are also multifunction, ie. they can scan and copy. And yes, they are AirPrint.
The refillable tanks was a major requirement.
I've searched back in my chat but cannot find the model. But I can ask them if that might help?

They bought the Canon GX1050. RRP is about £320. Neither of them paid that much.

Does Gutenprint have it in the driver set? After my Pixma MP600 lost
support in 10.15 or so I moved to Gutenprint, and that also covered my LaserJet5 when *that* lost support a year or two later.

Hmm, they haven't done a release since 2020, but there are later builds
in the snapshots folder if 5.3 doesn't cover your printer.

Thanks - but an A3 printer is too big, it sits on the sideboard in the living room and the various refillable solutions I've seen are not attractive. I definitely don't want a laser.

I am doing my nut in trying to find a replacement printer/scanner/copier that
    works over wifi.

The one's I've seen are either:
refilled with a black and a single all-colour cartridge rather than each
    separate colour
only able to print photos at 5 x 7 rather than A4
don't print to the edge without a margin
have no installed paper tray, paper has to be added to a rear-tray by hand
    aren't auto-duplex

Anyone have a multifunction that doesn't have those annoyances they can
recommend? Or know of another driver?

I got the Canon PIXMA TS5150 3-in-1 Printer for £60 - happy with it -
    nice and compact too.

Yes, I looked at that, but it has one black and one colour cart and I really wanted the 5 different inks
