• Broken Intel MBP's top left USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 port?

From Ant@21:1/5 to All on Wed Jul 24 15:28:24 2024
    Hello,

A 2020 13.3" Intel MBP (A2251 model; MWP62LL/A)'s top left USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 port stopped working for power charging and connecting with original Apple USB-C power and third party power adapters (e.g., Anker). I even tried to connecting Apple's USB-C
Digital AV Multiport Adapter and iPhones, but macOS Ventura v13.6.7's top right notification says "USB Accessories Disabled -- Unplug the accessory using too much power to re-enable USB devices." even with direct iPhone connected with USB-C and lighting
cables! Also, no HDMI video too. I also tried two USB-C hardwares (a flash stick and a mouse) on this "broken" USB-C/TB3 port. Both also failed to connect and macOS Ventura v13.6.7 says "USB Accessories Disabled -- Unplug the accessory using too much
    power to re-enable USB devices."

The other three ports worked fine so I suspect this port is busted since I used it a lot. I looked inside and things looked OK (not dirty and dusty), but it was tiny and hard to see inside. Does anyone know what else to try? I wonder if it got fried
inside. I sniffed that port and didn't smell anything unusual. My client said that port stopped working during his out of country week hot and humid trip.

Thank you for reading and hopefully answering soon. :)

Complaining of 'accessory using too much power' makes it sound like
there's a short circuit in the socket ie some contacts got bent and are touching. Disablement will happen in this case, which is rather better
    than the alternatives.

ifixit doesn't have a guide, but looking at the headphone jack
replacement guide I *think* it looks like the USB-C ports are on a
little sub board, in which case you can probably just get a fresh one
    and replace it. https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+13-Inch+Four+Thunderbolt+Ports+2020+Headphone+Jack+Replacement/143620

There's a guide for the Air which appears to show the same sub-boards: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Air+13-Inch+Late+2020+USB-C+Board+Replacement/142552

    Looks pretty simple.

If you search ebay for 'a2251 board usb' there's a variety of boards for
sale - some of them claim to be third party new rather than recycled Apple ones, but it looks to be just connectors on a flex PCB so I wouldn't be concerned using a third party board. I'm not sure if you need to buy a left
or a right handed one or if they're the same - some of the listings sell a pair, others sell singles without saying which so maybe they are identical.

I get this ("USB Accessories Disabled -- Unplug the accessory using too
much power to re-enable USB devices.") a lot on my 2017 MBA. Sometimes
every couple of minutes, sometimes it???ll go away for days or even weeks. At some point I???ll get round to replacing the I/O board (Power/USB/headphone).

When you get that message, what devices were those? Mouse and USB
sticks? Also, were you even able to charge your MBP with that port with
Apple's included USB-C power adapter charger?
