I updated M$Office on my older Mac today, only to find an app called
Microsoft Defender had been installed. Of course I immediately
dispatched it to the Wastebasket! In fairness I guess M$ are thinking
of corporate users who are forced to install AV software as part of
their business's IT policy. It may even save the business a bob or two
by not having to buy in 3rd party AV products. But even so .....

Microsoft Defender does not exist for Macs in the App Store. Are you
sure you did not install malware?

It appears to be a recent addition to Microsoft 365.

A search in the App Store a minute ago did not show $MS$-Defender.
Even in that crappy Office 365 there is no indication that the Defender
is a part of it: Just Word, Excel, Powerpoint, OneDrive, Outlook and
    OneNote.

Never ever on one of my/our Macs.

Yes the damn thing is there, all 1GB of it but I won’t use it anyway! Defender hasn’t re-appeared though but it was actually an installer which
    has to be triggered manually.

    Mine's 16.89.1 Office Home & Business 2021.

I've just noticed Defender - app dated May 2024. Opening it leads to an invitation to install - but needs a 365 subscription, which I don't have, or intend getting. IIRC the licence I bought was a standalone version.

I wouldn't use Teams by choice but that's what various branches
of the NHS that I must deal with use, so I'm stuck with it.

If they insist on using it they have to deliver hard- and software.

If that is not possible for any reason set up a separate user account
with reduced rights on your Mac and use Teams exclusively with that account.

It is unbelievable that tax payer financed institutions still use such overpriced software instead of open source solutions. In the case of the British NHS it is a particular tragedy.

This is an understatement. Microsoft is the supplier of maximum

Fortunately I do not need to use any collaborative app in my day to day
life :) The MS365 and its predecessor sub. allows me and family members to share its more useful features such as Word, PowerPoint and Excel. If it
was my choice when we wanted to use an “office” suite then I’d probably go
for LibreOffice, FreeOffice or Apple’s “iWork” apps. Sadly NeoOffice has ceased development but is still available.
