It appears to be a recent addition to Microsoft 365.

Watch out for friggin' Teams installing itself too. And then
reinstalling itself when you delete it.

The apps (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, OneNote) are at version 16.89. They
are all part of the subscription based product now called Microsoft 365. Look it
up on Microsoft's site or Wikipedia.

Yes the damn thing is there, all 1GB of it but I won't use it anyway!
Defender hasn't re-appeared though but it was actually an installer which
has to be triggered manually.
I wouldn't use Teams by choice but that's what various branches
of the NHS that I must deal with use, so I'm stuck with it.

I like Teams. I use it pretty much all day every day on my mac and ipad. I can't see why the hate. Maybe I'm suffering from Stockholm syndrome...?

Fortunately I do not need to use any collaborative app in my day to day
life :) The MS365 and its predecessor sub. allows me and family members to share its more useful features such as Word, PowerPoint and Excel. If it
was my choice when we wanted to use an “office” suite then I’d probably go
for LibreOffice, FreeOffice or Apple’s “iWork” apps. Sadly NeoOffice has
ceased development but is still available.
Yes I know that but the vote was in favour of Micosoft :(

You can share and work on $MS$-Files by using Libre Office or native
Apple appications.

What *you* use is *your decision*. You can't blame others for what you use.

Have you actually done it? In theory it should work, in practice formatting and font issues are a nightmare in docx, pptx are awful and xlsx works just about.
Then there's the lack of online collaboration..
