By some incredible mischance I find I have somehow logged onto a news site I have absolutely no interest in, and a site which sends me at least three news group messages a day.

Three times I have attempted to unsubscribe from this news group and each time
it is either failed or the news group in question ignores my wishes. This really p----s me off. So I have written a rule in mail which delete the messages each time it is received. So far so good.

If they are ignoring my attempts to unsubscribe then surely this is against the rules and regulations of Usenet. However, if it is against the rules any complaint I make would surely be followed by the news group saying how they had misunderstood my instructions or similar.

Has anyone else on this new group experienced similar behaviour by any new site? The one I am querying is called "Mumsnet".

Not me but there have been complaints raised via their forum. So it
might be worth posting there if you haven't already.

I think you're conflating things here. Usenet is the system of newsgroups
read through a newsreader like Thunderbird.

Mumsnet is a website, with nothing to do with Usenet.
It seems that you've somehow got yourself on a Mumsnet mailing list, and
it's their emails you're objecting to, not any Usenet postings.

At the bottom of the Mumsnet emails it says:

"This email was sent to [my email address removed]

You've received this email as you signed up to Mumsnet. We wanted to make
it easier to find the best threads on Mumsnet but if you don't want to
continue receiving this mail, unsubscribe below

    Update your email preferences

    Unsubscribe from all Mumsnet emails"

If I click on the 'unsubscribe from all Mumsnet emails' link it takes me to
    a page which says:

"Click on 'Unsubscribe here' to stop receiving this newsletter or to
    subscribe to other Mumsnet newsletters.

    <Unsubscribe Here button>

    [my email address removed]

[tiny print]Want to miss out and stop receiving all emails? You can click here[/tiny]"

Having 'unsubscribe all' in tiny print is quite sneaky. However if I press that I get 'you have successfully unsubscribed'.

I unsubscribed years ago but the links on old emails still appear to work so
I could copy the text above. I haven't received their emails for years so
it seems that I did use them to unsubscribe successfully.

Hmmm, as far as I’m aware, Mumsnet is a well established and higher quality website than most others. But as mentioned, they are an online web forum,
and nothing to do with Usenet. With Usenet it’s enough to simply remove the group from your list.

It’s possible they have a glitch, or perhaps just poorly designed subscription code.

Personally, I now use Apple’s Hide My Email (you get it if you subscribe to iCloud+). I create a new one for every site now, then it’s just a matter of deleting the address if you want to cease messages from that particular
site. It also shows if anyone is passing on your details, you’ll know the source if you get emails from other sites to that address).

You can also use a similar feature with DuckDuckGo now too.

It is well known among the transgender community as an unscrupulous
purveyor of hatred and lies. If they are blocking unsubscription it
    wouldn't surprise me at all.

Ok, wasn’t aware of that. ISTR I used it in the past (just ‘lurking’), and
found some helpful info there. But I guess many social/discussion sites
have just fallen into being toxic now.

I can remember a time when this group was moderated properly, and many
    others too. Ho hum.

It’s that reason I don’t have the usual accounts (such as Tik-Tok, Instagram and X etc.). I hardly bother FB with any attention now either.

The world is going to pot, and nobody seems to give a shit :-/
