• MS Office for Mac??

From TimH@21:1/5 to All on Sun Oct 13 12:28:41 2024
Any suggestions for the cheapest way to get this? I think I know about the official options, but is there anything like the market in OEM copies of Windows?

(Yes, I know about LibreOffice, and no, it's not an option in this case.)

Definitely legal is £59.99/yr for personal office 365 sub from Microsoft.

(And every now and again there are discounts on Amazon that you can buy
and "top up" an existing sub so if you keep your eyes open you can avoid
having to renew at the full rate.)

Probably hookey* is £19.00 for a lifetime 365 subscription from <https://softkeys.co.uk/collections/shop/products/office-365-professional-plus>

[*] but who knows - MS' licensing rules are arcane and they may be
exploiting a valid loophole for the moment.

Does that work on Mac? O365 web version will, but what about the native version?

    'Made by KyMakers':
    https://kymakers.com/product-category/microsoft-office/

who have plenty of cheap keys for Office 20xx but say they're Windows only. These are their
    Mac listings: https://kymakers.com/product-category/microsoft-office/microsoft-office-for-mac/

but they don't list any O365 products there, strangely, otherwise we might
get more details about what's included.

5TB lifetime storage for £19 one-time sounds a bit surprising, given people pay for O365 subscriptions...

Hmm, 241 people had this question: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/i-have-a-microsoft-365-personal-2023-lifetime/3bacae2a-ea6e-4f55-b12c-f8dda5cfe28e

A couple of Black Fridays ago I got the Family Office 365 + NOrton 360 (so
3 months extra of Office added, 15 in total, Norton not installed!) for
£59.99 at Amazon to add on to my current then subscription, so I am all
good until 2026! The Mac apps install without any problems on M1 Mac mini
    and M3 MacBook Air.

Otherwise as above the £59.99 for the personal version is fine, and on
Amazon if you include any system protection software in the purchase you
get an additional 3 months thrown in.

I would imagine that the subscription version will always allow the
current apps to be installed, not so sure a "Lifetime" (whose?)
    subscription would.

Afraid I can't remember the details, but I chose to steer clear of 365 and picked up an Mac Office 2021 'terrestrial' licence for about £30 a few years ago.

I think it's just a case of finding a legitimate web site/seller that has plenty of reviews going back at least a year.

As to the legality etc. of what I bought, not certain, but it seems OK and has updated without issue for the few years I've had it.

Thanks all. I should have said that I'm not at all keen on the subscription route, even though MS is obviously pushing people very hard in that direction.

Maybe I'll hang on for Black Friday, just in case. There definitely doesn't seem to be an abundance of sellers of cheap licences - apart from the
obviously scammy ones, as Theo points out - the way there is for Windows.

Bleeping Computer usually has it for around $50. Office 2021 for Mac. I bought Arm Windows 11 Pro, Office 2021 for Windows and Office 2021 for Mac for $125 total a year ago. Windows 11 Pro is under $20.

MS have announced Office 2024 long-term support for both Mac and Windows
which runs until 2029. So if you can find someone offering a key for

Only as a virtual machine via Parallels, VMware, UTM/QEMU apps. You can use QEMU without the UTM ‘wrapper’. There may be other suitable VM apps but you’ll need to search for them. I run a W11 ARM vm using UTM and before anyone asks my W11 is licensed. Note that the ARM version of W11 has an X86 emulator built-in.

Always could; when I got this M1 on launch one of the things I did early
on was set up a Parallels VM with Win10/ARM in it. Worked great. After a
year or so I deleted it as I hadn't used it at all.

Went to make a new one for a task more recently, can't set up a
Win10/ARM any more so did Win11. Did the task and hastily deleted the
nasty piece of crap. Worked though.

    Cheers - Jaimie
