• OT - requesting your help with an ART search!

From David Brooks@21:1/5 to All on Tue Oct 22 23:15:24 2024
    Hello!

I'm asking nicely for help trying to find a painting by my great
    grandfather.

Here you'll find some of his work:- https://artuk.org/discover/artists/crosby-william-18301910

My sister has a photograph of another picture he painted and is
wondering what may have happened to it. I've spent a fair while
searching online myself but, sadly, without success.

There is enormous talent reading here so I'd be most grateful if you
would use YOUR skills to see if you have more success than me.

Here's a rather poor quality image of the painting:- https://i.ibb.co/Ky1P5Cr/Image-22-10-2024-at-20-50.jpg

In particular, my sister would like to see an image of the painting in
    full colour glory.

    Good luck in your search!

    Thanks for your help.

I believe that the album/book, which contains twelve professional
quality, labelled, photographs must have been commissioned by my Great Grandfather himself at considerable cost. Over the years it must have
been passed down to his son, my grandfather (also a painter of some
note) then to my mother and it is now in the custody of my sister.

Here is a much better quality image of the photograph of the painting
called "The belle of the ball".

A reminder to readers - this is a view of a PAINTING - quite amazing IMO!

If anyone can help in finding a coloured image of the picture I'd really appreciate it - and so would my sister!

    Thanks for any help.

"The Belle of the Ball" by William Crosby (1830-1910)

This photograph shows an elegant painting by William Crosby, capturing a
moment of poised reflection between two women dressed in lavish ball
gowns. The intricate details of their attire, particularly the rich
textures of satin and lace, highlight the Victorian era's sophisticated
style. The central figure, standing with a fan in hand, exudes grace and modesty, while the second woman, leaning towards her, seems to offer
comfort or advice. In the background, a mirror reflects a further hint
of the room's grandeur. The setting includes marble columns and a richly patterned carpet, anchoring the scene in an opulent ballroom environment.

I had a look with Google Search (as no doubt did others including yourself).
    No joy.

When and where was it last heard of?

    Old John.

Thank you. I really appreciate your help, John. :-D

When and where was it last heard of?

The only record I have is in the album/book held by my sister (who lives
an hour+ away up the M5!). I'll guess that was compiled between 1900 and
1910, the year of William Crosby's death. There is no record of what
happened to the picture once it had been painted.

Portraits were, I understand, invariably commissioned works so it may
well be in the private collection of a once-wealthy family.
