• Time Machine different configs per disk?

From Martin-S@21:1/5 to All on Fri Nov 22 13:12:09 2024
Is it possible to have TM backup different sets of files depending on what backup disk is connected?

I want one disk to backup only the startup SSD and another disk to also backup any connected external SSDs.

The only thing I'm aware of is that you can have several TM disks connected at once, TM will use them in rotation.

Annoyingly it'll lie and say "you haven't backed up since xxxxx" daily
if one is missing, eg an occasional USB TM backup drive.

I've been raising that as a bug annually on new macOS releases for about
    a decade now...

Since the last OS update I keep getting error messages from TM when
waking from sleep to the effect that the last back-up failed because the machine went to sleep. Not had this before.

Not seen this yet but I've seen several reports of it. Some users have tried using caffeinate when performing a manual TM backup. But that would be a bit
of a pain especially if your using regular timed backups. I don't think having caffeinate running 24/7 is a particularly good idea!

Are you on an Intel? I haven't seen that on an Mseries here, but
wouldn't be at all surprised if they started forgetting how to deal with
    intel sleep modes...

Dang. And now that you mention it, a friend popped up with "My M2 MBP
keeps disconnecting the TM drive when it goes to sleep". Seems to be a
Sequioa thing for him, started with 15.0.

I see it in a 13" 2020 Intel MBP with macOS Ventura. :(

Although I don’t have any issues using TM to backup all my Macs via USB to large capacity external drives, since Sonoma I have been unable to use my
WD NAS over WiFi to backup my M1 MBP. It seems I’m not alone and users of other manufacturers’ NASs are affected too. Symptoms vary from cannot
create sparse bundle, cannot copy file, network error has occurred etc. There’s talk of changes in macOS’s SMB implementation having been made in Sonoma but no reliable fix or workaround seems to exist. For the record my
NAS works fine via WiFi (albeit slowly) when used to backup my Intel MBA running Monterey.
