I'm trying to find out where my documents are stored locally. Copying file attributes (option/command/c) of a file on the iCloud Drive in Finder gives me
    this path:

    /Users/Bob/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~CloudDocs/file.txt

But I can't see the Mobile Documents folder in /Users/Bob/Library/. Any idea why?!

It's a hidden folder. I can see in the Terminal, i.e.

    cd ~/Library/Mobile\ Documents

ls -la gives a comprehansive listing of the folder.

You can also get to it via the 'Go' -> 'Go to Folder' menu and it shows
    the contents of iCloud Drive.

    Thanks - that works.

ls -la gives a comprehansive listing of the folder.

Curious - that generates a listing of nothing I recognise, with the most
recent entry over a year old. For example:

    drwxr-xr-x 7 Bob staff 224 11 Jun 2021 com~apple~Keynote

Similar with ls - just a list with no recognisable folder or file names. Lots of references with iCloud~com and com~apple.

    the contents of iCloud Drive.

Yes, I've got iCloud Drive in the sidebar, so I can readily see what's in there. If I disconnect the internet I can still access my files, but the
iCloud Drive syncing is paused. And I can save a file to 'Documents', say,
when disconnected. What I don't understand it why I can't see the file in Finder (or Terminal) when I disconnect from the internet.

Yes I see lots of strangely named items too, some of them clearly referring
to apps I no longer have installed. I might just investigate out of interest the very oddly named items I do not recognise at all.

Remember back in the earliest days of iCloud files, where each app would
have its own sandboxed file pool but there wasn't a general file
browser? Those folders are the holdovers from then, still supported.

I had completely forgotten about that!
