Haven’t seriously used BBEdit since the days of System 7. I used to use TextWrangler for a while of course, but the extortionate cost of it just got too expensive for me to keep up.

BBEdit is FREE from the Apple App Store!

Yes I used TextWrangler for a while but then found I could use BBEdit for free.

I don't use it for normal correspondence text editing, Claris Works is
easier to use for that - but the line numbering and insetting structure
of BBEdit is brilliant for writing programs in HTML and PHP.

It is also handy when people send me attachments with over-long Windows
file names that get truncated and lose the file extension. With no meta
data, the only way to find out what file type they have sent me is to
read the code in BBEdit, so that I can add the correct extension.

One (possibly nerdy) advantage of Emacs, is that includes a built-in
Usenet client, gnus, which I've used for this follow-up.

I've only ever started emacs twice. On each occasion it took me 20 minutes of poking around the Internet to find how to quit it. So - never to be used
    again.

Unfortunately. Textwrangler started up in less than half the time
    BBedit takes.
