• Usenet for a PC?

From Liz Tuddenham@21:1/5 to All on Sat Dec 28 11:48:18 2024
A friend of mine who uses a PC would like to join a gardening group on
Usenet. I presume there isn't a PC version of MacSOUP, so what would be
the best program for her to use?

I'm happy to set her up on <news.individual.net>.

I've always got on well with Pan and Forte Agent although the latter may
no longer be supported. No doubt someone will suggest Thunderbird but Betterbird is, well, better!

IMO Thunderbird, Sea Monkey, et al. are at best cumbersome for Usenet
and at worst, inadequate. I recommend Microplanet Gravity as maintained
by Steve Gibson at GRC; it's a real Newsreader.

I'll second that. I tried it out a few years back and found it more than adequate.

Colin Macleod's Newsgrouper is excellent - a browser interface and free to register with him for posting in text groups.

This has already been suggested, and various people have hinted that it might not be that good in the role. With which sentiment I would agree.

It's easy to get hold of and anyone needing assistance in setting it up
is unlikely to be wanting the more esoteric functions of some of the
    more complicated newsreaders.

IMO, it is TB which is the more complicated. But that was from a brief
exposure some years ago; once was enough. Since then I've used simpler, more focussed products. YMMV.

I've said this before, but I really don't get what is so wrong about TB.
It's simple and familiar to those used to email who don't need much out of
    a newsreader.

Thunderbird works just fine for both email and Usenet newsgroup reading/writing.

There's even an active Thunderbird Usenet group for asking questions!

Nerdy suggestion: The short is no. I’m sure you know this, but you can install older versions of MacSOUP in an emulated Mac OS 9 environment on a
PC running the Windows version of SheepShaver.

    <https://sheepshaver.cebix.net>

However it hardly seems worth it given the many PC Usenet clients available!

An alternative is Newstap on iPad/iPhone it has a tree thread interface.

I'm a bit confused by their webpage, it looks as though there are only
about 30 groups that their newsreader gives you access to and they
    'noderate' the discussions.
