Maybe put the search phrase within double quotes, e.g. "tom dick harry"

Roger that, I'll try it next time, thanks.

Which search engine are you using? Do you type into the address bar at
the top of the Safari window or into the search entry field in the body
    of the form?

I can't reproduce what you are seeing either way using DuckDuckGo.

Google. And I type into the address bar - that's what it's for. Otherwise I have to bring up Google and *then* type in my search string.

I couldn't reproduce it either, but machine is on Big Sur so that's an old Safari
and not sure that's very relevant.

This is Sonoma 14.7.2 with Safari 18.2.

All I can think of is that the phrase you're searching for is vaguely
URL like and Safari tries to make it into a URL? I would have thought
that you would have noticed if that were the case, though.

In Safari -> Settings -> Advanced there is an option "Smart search field
[ ] Show full website addresses". That might have an effect. I have it
on but I don't remember changing it so it could be the default.

As is the case with these things, testing just now it wasn't doing it and I suspect there must be some pattern to the search which triggers it. I have
this setting ticked, but next time this happens I'll try turning it off.

Similarly, if you have developer mode enabled, in the Developer settings
panel there is "Allow Javascript from Smart Search field" which also
might have an effect. I have it off.

Lastly, you could side-step the issue by not searching from within
Safari at all. :-) Use Spotlight (cmd-space to invoke), type your query
and end with cmd-B rather than enter. This opens Safari and searches on
    what you just entered.

If you were to enter 'amazon.com' Safari might take you to
https://amazon.com/ but show 'amazon.com' in the bar.

and then you edit it to append ' rubber duck'

Just tried that in Chromium and firefox and what it actually does is sends the string "https://www.amazon.com rubber duck" to my default search, but when I
do it in Safari I get:
    https://www.amazon.com/%20rubber%20duck
    which is 404.

(Amazon is redirecting https://amazon.com/ to https://www.amazon.com/ but
    that doesn't change things)
