• Migration Assistant - insufficient space

From RJH@21:1/5 to All on Fri Jan 31 19:08:16 2025
I'm trying to use Migration Assitant to transfer data from a 500GB iMac with 300GB used to a new 250GB Mini.

I realise (of course!) that that I'm 50GB short on the Mini. I was hoping that files in User/Library/Metadata/SpotlightKnowledgeEvents wouldn't need to be transferred - there's about 80GB in that folder alone. I've no idea what these .journal files are or what they do. They seem to have accummulated at about
1GB a day for the past few months.

Is there a way round this? The Mini's Migration Assistant won't budge on Library files, with no option to deselect anything in the iMac's Library folder.

If I'm stuck with those files on the iMac I'm happy to start fresh on the
Mini, adding things as I go, and using an external drive as much as possible/necessary. I did in fact start to do this, but the Mini started to sync with the iCloud and I wasn't sure if just copying data over from the iMac to the Mini would confuse the iCloud data.

I could just start a new account, but then it'll muck up the phone, ipad etc, which all sync nicely at the moment.

    Suggestions welcome!

Update: apparently there is - simply delete the system files in the Metadata folder*.

It does seem to be astonishingly inefficient method of searching - the search database is larger than the data it serves.

    Anyway, it worked.
