• USB-C dongle advice

    From D.M. Procida@21:1/5 to All on Tue Feb 4 14:29:16 2025
    I could do with a USB-C dongle.

    I'd like:

    * HDMI
    * SDCARD
    * USB-A and USB-C ports

    And if possible, to be able to plug it into an external display's USB-C connector, to take power from the display.

    Any recommendations or advice on what to look for?

    I have one of these, although mine has VGA instead of DisplayPort: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07RMDFNTB

    Works fine on the Windows laptop I originally bought it for, and the MacBook Air it's now hooked up to, but for both I have the original power supplies to hand.

    Not sure on the power provision of a display as it mentions about 65W minimum to avoid (error) messages.

    Drats. They don't ship to USA. I tried https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RMDFNTB, but it said "Currently unavailable. We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock.".

    Blame Trump.

    Many EU suppliers don't ship to the UK because of Brexit.

    We all have to develop and manufacture our own products from now on. I
    suppose it saves the environmental cost of all that shipping!

    Have a look at Anker products. They're great. I had one for my M1 MBP with pass-through power.

    Can you confirm that it would take power from the USB-C port on the display, i.e. video passes through the dock in one direction and power in the other?

    Most of the ones I have seen described suggest that they will pass through power from a charger, not necessarily from the display they're connected to.

    Can't confirm that, sorry. Not a setup I tried.

    Not sure how the dongle can differentiate between power sources. If the source is capable of providing the required power then that's all that is required.

    Apparently, it requires something called "USB-C DP Alt Mode", that not many have.

    "USB Type-C DisplayPort Alternative Mode" just means that the monitor can
    ask the hub to give it DisplayPort video, rather than a USB signal. It
    doesn't indicate anything about which way power can flow on that connection.
    It just says that the hub can output video on a USB-C port - most hubs will only do USB on their downstream Type-C ports (they work just like a classic USB-A hub but with Type-C connectors).

    You need a hub that both has a DP Alt Mode port *and* accepts power on that connection. Those two things are orthogonal.
