• Sequoia update ??

From TimS@21:1/5 to All on Mon Apr 28 09:27:59 2025
I'm running Sonoma.Latest on a 2018 Mini. Apple seems to imagine I want to update to Sequoia. Is there any good technical reason (e.g. bug fixes) to do so. I can live without the extra 8 emojis.

Ha - I'll be very interested in any replies!

For once I've leapfrogged you Tim: I've just installed Sequoia 15.4.1 on my "latest" iMac (2019) - the one to which I have been migrating, not without hiccups, from my "old" (2013, Mojave). I just completed that this morning.
And so I am blundering about, waiting to see what will happen.

I intend to continue using my "old" one as my working machine, and to make the final jump across when I'm ready (or forced to). Meanwhile I'll fiddle about with Sequoia as and when I find the time. I must say it _looks_ lovely, but that of course is trivia, which is based upon the Retina display.

So far: the System Settings -- as every Sequoia user that I've seen comment
has said -- "take some getting used to".
Must have been commissioned and designed by people who do every damn thing on their iPhone, and who regard desktops in the same way that we used to regard 3.5" disks in the 2000s.

If you can, it's recommended to run the latest version. Sonoma isn't
getting all the updates Sequoia is including security-related ones.

But that's what they always say. If all that Sequoia gets me is a few more emojis, then why should I bother?

    All is explained here, Tim:-

There's the security updates. Like I said.

The macOS xprotect system obviously still runs on Sonoma but will normally
only offer basic protection from malware. But if you’re careful and run 3rd party apps such as MalwareBytes, DetectX Swift you should be OK with
    Sonoma.

    What malware?

I agree there are no Mac viruses (viri?) out there so no AV products need
to be installed. According to Apple's own xprotect app we currently need protection from the following items of other forms of malware:

    Adload
    BadGacha
    BlueTop
    Bundlore
    CardboardCutout
    ColdSnap
    Crapyrator
    Dolittle
    DubRobber
    FloppyFlipper
    Genieo
    GreenAcre
    KeySteal
    Pirrit
    RankStank
    RoachFlight
    SheepSwap
    SnowBeagle
    SnowDrift
    ToyDrop
    Trovi
    WaterNet

I've no idea what they might do as Apple never provide details. Anyway
they've given them some rather odd and amusing names!

No 3rd party "malware" stuff here, thanks.

I occasionally download MWB, run it and then delete it. However it's
    never found anything.

Sorry Alan. That is nonsense. All this third party crap is *malware*.

Well at least I haven't paid money for them ;-)

Maybe they have better window management. I'm trying 'rectangle'
with Sonoma but it's not anything to write home about.
