Anyone going to watch this? I’m not in the market for any new expensive h/w or s/w at the moment, so I’m not exactly getting excited! Mammoth (as in Mammoth Lake, California) seems odds-on to be the name given to macOS
    13.

    yes.

Im not in the market for any new expensive h/w
    or s/w at the moment,

the updates to mac os, ios, etc. will be free.

the mac pro will be expensive, but it will also be interesting to see
just how much performance it has over a mac studio, which is already
    quite good.

so Im not exactly getting excited! Mammoth (as in
Mammoth Lake, California) seems odds-on to be the name given to macOS
    13.

so were some of the cat names, especially with the pairs: leopard/snow
leopard, lion/mountain lion, sierra/high sierra, and who can forget 'jag-you-are'.

I’ve seen reports that there may be an upgraded Intel Mac Pro on sale alongside or even before there’s one powered by M* devices. Whatever a new pro will be one powerful beastie.

Bah humbug :( In the words of Ken Bruce ³one year out²

    <https://www.apple.com/macos/macos-ventura-preview/>

what's really funny is that the mac studio is not listed, a mac that
was announced just three months ago.

and it's now listed as supported. good thing i grabbed a screenshot.

    I should think so too!

It’s not all doom and gloom for those with Macs that miss out on Venture as Monterey should still be officially supported by Apple for a couple of more years.

Intel iMacs seem to be clinging on to most of the features - just some emoji support missing over an M1 from what I can see.

matching how I work. Nothing wrong with the machines, just...not for me.

Floating window support starts bringing it closer. From what I can see though it’s not -true- floating window but some sort of weird ‘arrangement’ view, where something has to be pushed to the back. I couldn’t, for
example, put a Citrix window at the left, a messages window at the top right and a WhatsApp window bottom right (before you say ’split view’ - let’s not. Always looked a bit Desqview’esque to me, although even Desqview was more flexible),

So really interested to see how this one pans out.

Yeah, it'll be interesting to try. Split view worked for that, it was
just so horribly unpredictable and uncontrollable. I never managed to
work out the floating-window <-> split view transition process.

On the beta for 13 now; it's done two things notable:

    1) Notified that something has added itself to one of the startup
locations (login items/launch agent/launch daemon) and clicking takes
you to the control panel for that stuff

    2) Took about 15 hours to reindex my Photos sufficiently that the search
bar there found *anything*. I'd logged it as a bug long before it
    completed.

I was hoping to install it on my Intel MBA but as I said earlier it’s not supported with Ventura. I will wait a wee while and then risk installing it
on my M1 machine (in a separate volume set). I do keep copious backups
before anyone asks! There’s quite a few new features to explore such as the updated Safari and the new Stage Manager.

    Three things.

    3) For non-obvious reasons DNS requests were slow for the first day.
Started super slow, got quicker until next morning they were normal
again. Affected nslookup as well; I disabled and enabled the Apple
network privacy settings; Firefox's "dns over https" didn't improve it
either. I didn't go as far as packet-sniffing.

I quite like the new System Prefs in iOS style, except it's a bit
uncomfortable at the fixed width they have chosen. Demotion of
Apple/About This Mac to a crappy modern-notifications panel is ugly - it
takes you over to the General panel in Sys Prefs if you go for More
Info, which isn't very pretty either.

    Cheers - Jaimie

Trying out Stage Manager. Seems useful but I need to play with it a
bit longer - no Stage Fright though ;) Weather app is a nice addition
even if the forecast is crap!

slrn compiled OK as expected and I'm using it with BBEdit to compose
