• Unsupported iMac with Monterey (longish)

From Andy Hewitt@21:1/5 to All on Thu Jun 16 16:23:55 2022
So, thanks to the 'Moving from Mojave' thread, I have now used OCLP to
install Monterey on my old iMac 2013.

My thinking is that this is just a secondary device now, and I only use
it occasionally, most of my serious stuff is done on my iPad Pro.

However, I've found one or two odd things that have become troublesome,
such as Pages and Numbers documents created, or edited, on the iPad, no
longer open on the iMac using Catalina.

And although I can import and manage the folder and albums etc. in
Photos, edits are not transferring across from the iPad (not terribly important, but could be handy at times).

Of course not forgetting the rumoured upcoming 'vintage' status of
Catalina, which may not get any more security updates.

I was thinking about a used Monterey capable machine to replace the
iMac, but that still looks too costly, and way beyond what I can justify
    for the need.

So, after the initial test, using OCLP on a spare external HDD, I was
happy with the process, and the performance (USB speed was considered),
and the stability seemed OK. I got no crashes, and everything worked.

I've now took the plunge, and installed OCLP and Monterey (I chose a
'Release' version, not a 'Beta', I thought things are risky enough as it
    is:-)) onto my internal SSD.

So far, so good. I did need to run the Post Install Upgrader, for the
GPU, which fixed a few minor glitches. Otherwise, I haven't come across anything untoward, at least nothing that wasn't apparent before (so they haven't fixed everything after two major upgrades then!).

I was astonished to find that some things worked that I wasn't
expecting, such as Universal Control, which works a treat with my iPad
Pro (saves me the BT Keyboard and Mouse I had cluttering up the desk -
although it actually worked both ways). Even Sidecar works, after a fashion.

Performance wise, I can't tell any difference, although some stuff is
still 'curating' after the install, it's running pretty much as before
(speedy enough for my needs anyway).

So yeah, if you have an ageing Mac, likely to end up in recycle, or
stuck in a cupboard, OCLP is probably worth a punt.

    I think there's a misunderstanding there.

The iWork apps were troublesome /before/ I upgraded to Monterey. These
were stuck on older version in Catalina on the iMac, but had upgraded to
the latest versions on the iPad. This had meant that I couldn't open any documents created on the iPad.

Since I've installed Monterey, and upgraded the iWork apps on the iMac,
I can now open all those documents.

I have a Nesspresso machine used the Staebucks branded luminium pods for a couple years. Usually from Amazon unless the local Tesco/Morrisons match the price. However I think the machine is nearing end of life and will probably

My wife uses coffee grounds on the garden. Apparently it's good for something out there. So I scrape the pods out and chuck the empties in the recycling

For a real mug of coffee it's currently Lavazza in an Aeropress which I have used for years. Coffee again from Amazon unless it's cheaper elsewhere.

So I bought a Swan Retro Espresso machine (as recommended on https://coffeeblog.co.uk). It does work out cheaper than using pods. I
don’t mind the extra faffing about, it adds a little something to the experience of coffee drinking. I’m not a snob, but I do like a good coffee.

However, wanting to keep costs low, I have been using the lowest cost
supplies I can find. So far that has been Happy Belly from Amazon (two 250g bags for £5.50). I also tried Lavazza (no better for more money) and Illy (didn’t like that much at all).

I’m trying Taylors Espresso blend, which is OK, although no better than the Happy Belly for a little more cost (£3.50 for 227g on offer). I’ve tried
the Sainsbury’s own Decaf - although that’s not an espresso grind, it’s actually Ok for a milder cup.

I’ll have a look at Red Monkey, I’ll probably order some to try, thanks.

Perhaps this all might help with my OP about hacking an old iMac ;-)

In recent years we've become Nespresso machine and pod users (what else?). Yodel delivers the pods and takes then when used. We do use our cafetiere occasionally but I've not really found a coffee I really like. Perhaps
I should stop buying the supermarket own brands? Anyway nothing
ventured, nothing gained I'm going to order some Red Monkey house blend.

I was about to buy a Nespresso machine myself, but when I saw the cost
of the pods, compared to the Dulce Gusto ones, that's when I abandoned,
and went with a manual espresso jobby.

There are things in between cheap supermarket and expensive artisan stuff.

If you have any interest, it's worth having a read of some articles, and watching some of his videos over at https://coffeeblog.co.uk.

It can be as much about /how/ you brew the coffee as it is about the
    coffee itself.

Of course if you really want to go another level, get some beans and a
    decent burr grinder :-).

I was thinking about getting one of those stove top peculator things.
The genuine Italian ones aren't that expensive either (so not worth

It's trying to get decent espresso grind that starts to get expensive.

I bought a JLP cheap grinder a year or so back which I use for cafetière coffee. It's a noisy as hell but, after a little practice, it's
surprisingly easy to control the fineness just by noting (sorry) the

Their colombian decaff is the only decaff I've ever fooled actual coffee
snobs with :) The house blend is also extremely nice.

Thanks - I'll investigate as our coffee spend is getting silly.

Also nice to see a 'click to enter' button after all these years :)

To be entirely fair, they've not updated their site in well over a
decade either! Note lack of https, bless them.

I got the coffee and brewed up Sunday morning.
Very nice too. I was impressed.
Anyway, later that day my wife made some coffee. It was not nice.
What, I asked have you made this from?
It turns out that this bitter brew was my old stock that I /had/ been drinking perfectly happily for the past 10 years or so...

    :-(

Anyone want to buy a couple of pounds of coffee?

    I quite like beer too.

But, slug pellets are not at all eco friendly as they go on to poison birds etc. Apparently nematodes are the way forward not that I've tried them out.
