I think there have been a few discussions of this here recently - would somebody mind giving a very brief summary of the state of play? (It's Linux I'm specifically interested in.) Last I looked, there was a free version of Fusion but it didn't run on ARM - that still the case?

For linux I use UTM. It's free and lightweight. I use it to run Arm builds
of linux, but apparently it'll do intel builds also.

Thanks both. I couldn't get the vmware link to work, but will give UTM a go - looks promising!
I started by installing Ubuntu Server and then installing a variety of desktop environments using tasksel and then stuck with which one(s) I
liked. You can of course do something similar with, say, Debian server.
I try to avoid the Webdav interface (as installed by the Spice tools)
for sharing Mac files as it's very slow. SSHFS is much quicker but you probably know that!
Must admit I got slightly distracted by the Mac OS 9.2 image on their site, and have been happily playing with that when I should be doing productive things with Debian. Might *just* see if I can get System 7.1 running though...

You have to setup or have an account to download the software.

Yes, did all that. The page just hangs at the 'progress' circley thing... Fairly irritating site all round actually. 'Search' doesn't even find Fusion Player.

Wow! Those bring back happy memories not yet forgotten :)
I'm trying to setup networking on my UTM 9.2 VM. If I succeed no doubt
there will be plenty of issues with IE and Netscape! No Safari and
other now well known browsers in those days.

indeed. there's quite the selection of apps too, including codewarrior
and think c/pascal.

Yes I certainly used macweb. Wasn¹t IE based on Mosaic and I think Netscape grew out of Mosaic too?

Anyway, having lots of fun with UTM so not really an issue now :)

Thanks - I know the site but tend to forget to check in on it. That looks very
useful.
(Since I last posted on this, I had a lot of erratic behaviour from the Debian
setup I'd installed from the gallery (random freezes mostly), but Ubuntu seems
to be doing fine. Very impressed with the speed!)
I've downloaded the latest iso for arm64 Debian 11.3 aka "bullseye"
(all ~4GB of it) and will attempt to create a vm in UTM later.

I downloaded debian-11.3.0-arm64-DVD-1.iso from the link at the bottom of this
page:
<https://cdimage.debian.org/mirror/cdimage/release/current/arm64/iso-dvd/>
BTW I'm not familiar with the jigdo tool.
Using UTM, installation was fine - I chose mostly the default options. I opted
for the KDE Plasma desktop environment. I forgot to disconnect the iso from the virtual DVD device so it tried to reinstall on restart but I soon fixed that!
Debian seems to run very fast with no glitches so far. I installed the Spice Tools as advised by the UTM developers but haven't bothered with file sharing as Webdav is not exactly the fastest method to use. I'm using ssh and sftp to access any files I want on macOS. I had to make a minor change to /etc/apt/sources.list in Debian to get updates working but that's not the fault of UTM.
If anything nasty crops up as I use it more, I'll report back.

FWIW UTM seems to run OK in Ventura Beta on my M1 Mac. Copied over a
vm file (Debian11.utm) from my Monterey system and so far so good.
