I think there have been a few discussions of this here recently - would somebody mind giving a very brief summary of the state of play? (It's Linux
I'm specifically interested in.) Last I looked, there was a free version of Fusion but it didn't run on ARM - that still the case?

There is a beta version of Fusion.

    <https://customerconnect.vmware.com/downloads/get-download?downloadGroup=FUS-PUBTP-2021H1>

I’ve setup various VMs using the M1 Parallels offering,e.g. Ubuntu, Kali, OpenSUSE LEAP , Manjaro and other compatible arm ISO’s are now becoming available. I’ve also setup arm versions of Windows 10 and 11 but of course Parallels is not free. UTM is free and seems a good alternative to
Parallels and VMware. It’s based on QEMU but I haven’t been brave enough to use QEMU on its own!

For linux I use UTM. It's free and lightweight. I use it to run Arm builds
of linux, but apparently it'll do intel builds also.

Yes even a WXP based VM runs albeit a little slowly. UTM will also run on
Intel Macs which would be a better option for building VMs using x86 based ISOs.

Thanks both. I couldn't get the vmware link to work, but will give UTM a go - looks promising!

I started by installing Ubuntu Server and then installing a variety of
desktop environments using tasksel and then stuck with which one(s) I
liked. You can of course do something similar with, say, Debian server.
I try to avoid the Webdav interface (as installed by the Spice tools)
for sharing Mac files as it's very slow. SSHFS is much quicker but you
    probably know that!

    I didn't so thanks! It's been a while...

Yes, did all that. The page just hangs at the 'progress' circley thing... Fairly irritating site all round actually. 'Search' doesn't even find Fusion Player.

Anyway, having lots of fun with UTM so not really an issue now :)

mac ie, which shares only its name with windows ie, was developed
entirely by microsoft's mac business unit.

everything between the two browsers, particularly the render engines,
were completely different, which meant websites didn't always work the
same on both. the 'best viewed with ie' badges, as was common back
then, meant nothing to mac ie users.

I downloaded debian-11.3.0-arm64-DVD-1.iso from the link at the bottom of this page:

    <https://cdimage.debian.org/mirror/cdimage/release/current/arm64/iso-dvd/>

BTW I'm not familiar with the jigdo tool.

Using UTM, installation was fine - I chose mostly the default options. I opted for the KDE Plasma desktop environment. I forgot to disconnect the iso from
the virtual DVD device so it tried to reinstall on restart but I soon fixed that!

Debian seems to run very fast with no glitches so far. I installed the Spice Tools as advised by the UTM developers but haven't bothered with file sharing as Webdav is not exactly the fastest method to use. I'm using ssh and sftp to access any files I want on macOS. I had to make a minor change to /etc/apt/sources.list in Debian to get updates working but that's not the
    fault of UTM.

If anything nasty crops up as I use it more, I'll report back.

Debian seems to run very fast with no glitches so far. I installed the Spice >> Tools as advised by the UTM developers but haven't bothered with file sharing
as Webdav is not exactly the fastest method to use. I'm using ssh and sftp to
access any files I want on macOS. I had to make a minor change to
/etc/apt/sources.list in Debian to get updates working but that's not the
    fault of UTM.

If anything nasty crops up as I use it more, I'll report back.

Thanks - all useful to know.

I've also created a VM with Parallels on my M1 Mac so as to compare performance. Installing Parallels Tools was not straight forward but
    it's done now.

I've downloaded the latest iso for arm64 Debian 11.3 aka "bullseye"
(all ~4GB of it) and will attempt to create a vm in UTM later.

    Will await with interest!

I downloaded debian-11.3.0-arm64-DVD-1.iso from the link at the bottom of this
    page:

BTW I'm not familiar with the jigdo tool.

Using UTM, installation was fine - I chose mostly the default options. I opted
for the KDE Plasma desktop environment. I forgot to disconnect the iso from the virtual DVD device so it tried to reinstall on restart but I soon fixed that!

FWIW UTM seems to run OK in Ventura Beta on my M1 Mac. Copied over a
vm file (Debian11.utm) from my Monterey system and so far so good.

I see Howard Oakley has an experimental offering now.
