This is my second posting on this subject, the first degenerated into the pros

On occasion, my iMac is running very slow when attempting to change programs or manoeuvre within programs. Any attempt to do something brings up a spinning
beachball and is followed by a long wait before the instruction to the Mac is completed.
This syndrome is not constant. It will disappear and act normally for awhile before reverting to this frustrating behaviour.

I have run Malware bytes for a third time, and the result shows no problems. I have run Disk Utility, First aid and no problems indicated. I am now at the end of my technical knowledge and I need help.

    My specs are:

    Try this procedure, Peter:-

Leave for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.

    I hope this helps.

How long is a long wait? Seconds, tens of seconds, minutes?

Do you have a USB external disk attached? I've found that sometimes a TM external drive hangs Finder (resulting in long app launch times of up to
20s) and also blocks all programs trying to access any drive, while some
sort of disk check is run on the drive[1]. But it's a once at login
(disk mount) thing rather than periodic.

that's likely the drive spinning up after having spun down when idle.

Problem with the TM disc? I see to remember odd problems when my TM disc started acting up. Replaced it with a new (bigger) disc and the problems
went away. oddly the original disc, reformatted, now behaves perfectly
as a backup for some temporary files.

Sound generally does not work in Safe mode as it’s not an “essential function”.

Hopefully you’re getting somewhere if DU reports problems.

How long is a long wait? Seconds, tens of seconds, minutes?
    up to 20 seconds.

Do you have a USB external disk attached?
Yes a 1TB USB HD running Time Machine.
    Peter

Did you do as I suggested yesterday, Peter?

    =

    Try this procedure, Peter:-

    https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/mac-help/mh21245/mac

Leave for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.

    I hope this helps.

    David

I started up in safe mode and experienced no problems. Everything seemed to work, with the exception of the sound card. Is this in any way significant? Maybe it's not supposed to work in safe mode.

Thank you for advising that you have done as I suggested! :-)

Sound does NOT work in Safe Boot Mode.

My next suggestion is that you boot into Recovery Mode - https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204904

Use Disk Utility there on ALL your disks

    Then restart.

I got up this morning checked my email which took about 30 minutes just to down-load, attempted to run Usenapp which hung forever, and the system just moved at snails pace. I noticed that TM was backing up, so I'm going to remove the external HD and see what happens now.
I am wondering if the HD could be u/s, although Disk Utility shows nothing wrong.

Alas, I'm kidding myself.

Is this the first backup written to the replacement drive you mentioned yesterday. If so it may take some time to perform the initial backup and
could slow down your Mac. Are you using a ‘spinning’ EHD or SSD? APFS gives the best performance with SSDs but HFS+ is best for spinners. I think you
have previously said your Mac runs the latest MacOS.

I'd be interested to learn how your iMac performs once you have ejected,
your Time Machine back-up disk and restarted your computer.

Please notify us when you have done that.

Do you have a separate device you can use to 'talk' to us here on Usenet?

There's some good analysis around of how some very specific usage
patterns cause perf issues with APFS on non-SSDs. However I think those particular usage patterns are NOT something that happens during a Time
    Machine backup.

Happy to be proven wrong though.

Right. And having a rather slow but fully functioning *target* drive
wouldn't make the Mac laggy - it would in fact give it less trouble as
the rate-limited TM data transfer wouldn't be stressing the Mac's source
    SSD at all.

If however the target drive is dying in the "it's hard to write files
because of all the retries" fashion, that can trash performance as macOS
does gets backlogged when it's waiting on drive hardware to respond. Or
at least Finder does, and that has repercussions on other apps.

    Cheers - Jaimie

Yes, it seems to me much more likely that the issue is with the target
Time Machine disk. Peter, do you have any specs for it - including how
    old it is?
