This is my second posting on this subject, the first degenerated into the pros
and cons of Dropbox, for some reason.
On occasion, my iMac is running very slow when attempting to change programs or manoeuvre within programs. Any attempt to do something brings up a spinning
beachball and is followed by a long wait before the instruction to the Mac is completed.
This syndrome is not constant. It will disappear and act normally for awhile before reverting to this frustrating behaviour.
I have run Malware bytes for a third time, and the result shows no problems. I have run Disk Utility, First aid and no problems indicated. I am now at the end of my technical knowledge and I need help.
My specs are:
iMac Retina 4K, 2019
Processor 3.6GHz Quad-Core intel core i3
Memory 8 GB 2400 NHz DDR4
Graphics Radeon Pro 555X 2 GB
Any help gratefully recieved.

Do you have a USB external disk attached? I've found that sometimes a TM external drive hangs Finder (resulting in long app launch times of up to
20s) and also blocks all programs trying to access any drive, while some
sort of disk check is run on the drive[1]. But it's a once at login
(disk mount) thing rather than periodic.
[1] If only someone could invent some crazy new technology like
background, threaded processing!

Yes we've all had temperamental disks which behave themselves once reformatted!
Peter's issue could be caused by many things, so I guess possibilities may have to be eliminated one at a time.

There does seem to be a finger of su spicion po inting atr my ™
external H.D.
The next time I experience problems I'll disconnect the disk and
see what
happens. In the meanwhile I'll try and run Disk Utility on it and
see what if anything DU reports.
Peter
DU scanned the ™ HD and reported all well. The only thing was it took >>>> 1 hr and 47 minutes to complete the scan of the 336GB HD. Seems slow.
And now the sytem is running slow again.

Is a TM backup in progress?
Whatever I would stop TM backing up to the disk and eject the disk and
see if the problem goes away.
I attempted to do a manual backup and everything went very strange. TM
hang up, the system went rather slow and I assumed that the HD was
ferked. I removed the Hd put another one that I had spare in, and
everything is now looking OK.
Many thanks for all of the help and advice.

This is my second posting on this subject, the first degenerated into the pros
and cons of Dropbox, for some reason.
On occasion, my iMac is running very slow when attempting to change programs
or manoeuvre within programs. Any attempt to do something brings up a spinning
beachball and is followed by a long wait before the instruction to the Mac is
completed.
This syndrome is not constant. It will disappear and act normally for awhile
before reverting to this frustrating behaviour.

How long is a long wait? Seconds, tens of seconds, minutes?
Yes a 1TB USB HD running Time Machine.
Do you have a USB external disk attached?

All's well that end well, as they say.
Alas, I'm kidding myself. I got up this morning checked my email which took about 30 minutes just to down-load, attempted to run Usenapp which hung forever, and the system just moved at snails pace. I noticed that TM was backing up, so I'm going to remove the external HD and see what happens now. I am wondering if the HD could be u/s, although Disk Utility shows nothing wrong.

Is this the first backup written to the replacement drive you mentioned yesterday. If so it may take some time to perform the initial backup and could slow down your Mac. Are you using a ‘spinning’ EHD or SSD? APFS gives
the best performance with SSDs but HFS+ is best for spinners. I think you have previously said your Mac runs the latest MacOS.

There's some good analysis around of how some very specific usage
patterns cause perf issues with APFS on non-SSDs. However I think those particular usage patterns are NOT something that happens during a Time Machine backup.
It's OK. I'm an atheist catholic.- deKay and Gareth Halfacree, ugvm
So you just feel guilty for /no readily apparent reason/.
If however the target drive is dying in the "it's hard to write files
because of all the retries" fashion, that can trash performance as macOS
does gets backlogged when it's waiting on drive hardware to respond. Or
at least Finder does, and that has repercussions on other apps.
