• Another photo transfer issue

From Mark@21:1/5 to All on Wed Aug 24 10:03:43 2022
I downloaded three photos from an SD card to my iPhone with the Apple
adapter. Then I wanted them on my iPad. I had deleted them from the
card, so how do I get them onto the iPad (two JPG and one RAW):

    AirDrop
    DropCopy
    Photo Transfer App
    iCloud folder
    Email

...all change the RAW to JPG and all reduce the image size. Very frustrating.

If you put the photographs into the Apple iCloud they will then become
viewable on all your Apple devices (which are using the same Apple ID).

Just a bit confused here! If they are currently visible in Photos on your iPhone then they should be visible in Photos on your iPad when
synchronized via iCloud. Of course it is possible to keep image files on
iCloud Drive - you would be able to see them and manipulate them using the Files app. If you want to store the image files literally locally on your iPad's internal storage, then a third party solution such as Readdle's Documents app might be worth considering.

I don't have them syncronised (never used that). I now simply ingest
photos from an SD card to the iPad, then edit/post them to <wherever>
    from there.

I generally use my iPhone for 'throwaway' photos, screenshots, etc. On
the iPad I have a more deliberate selection/editing process for camera
photos. I'd rather not have to wade through everything just to select
    those.

To be honest, I'm still trying to get my head around the whole JPG/RAW
thing. I can do a 'get info' on a photo in photos (iPad/iPhone) and
it'll tell me it's an 11mb RAW file. If I use Metaphoto to query it.
it'll tell me it's a 3.3mb JPG... Passing a RAW photo off to Documents
also changes it to JPG and reduces the size...

Can't help feeling I'm missing something.

Can you not copy them back to the card in the adapter? Photos -> Share

Save to Files, then select the card. Then plug the card into a reader connected to the iPad.

Sometimes the simplest of solutions aren't the most obvious ;)

Y'know, that was the first thing I thought of last night, but I didn't
think to scroll down instead of up! Hence I didn't see the card as an
    option. Just done it! However....

The 11.9MB RAW file shows as a 3.2MB JPEG when moved over.

And Metaphoto (a little meta info app) shows both as being 3.2MB JPEGs.

I use folders and albums to manage mine, and have all of my images in one Photos library.

To be honest, I'm still trying to get my head around the whole JPG/RAW

I’d suspect that Metaphoto is showing the details of the image being
viewed, which will be a JPEG preview image, stored with the Raw (many Raws
also contain a JPEG preview within the file).

If you have a look with something like HashPhotos, you can switch between
the versions, and see the details of the original Raw, and any JPEG preview
as well. You’ll certainly see this if you’ve done any editing at all.

Can't help feeling I'm missing something.

Don’t know. Most apps I’ve used show the details as a Raw, even after editing.

What do you have in Settings -> Photos -> Transfer to Mac or PC?
Mine is set to 'Automatic', the other option being 'Keep Originals'.

    It describes the option as:
"Automatically transfer photos and videos in a compatible format, or always transfer the original file without checking for compatibility"

I'd expect 'Keep Originals' to be what you want.
