Further woes with gmail. My iMac is now refusing to download messages
from my gmail account although my iPhone is happy to do so. The mac is
on Catalina, the phone is OS15.6.1.
Happened after I switched on on Thursday and I've tried rebooting but
that doesn't help. No error messages, just the ~ symbol by the mailbox.

Is this using Apple mail on the iMac? Just sent a test email to my Gmail account from elsewhere and all seems well. I'm using IMAP and running the latest Monterey build on my Mac.

Yes that might work. I've done that in the past and shouldn't do too much harm, if any, when IMAP is being used.

I'll give it a try.

Next time, look at the Connection Doctor on Mail's Window menu. It is
rather useful, widely unknown, but can save you from the Windows-esque solution of deleting and recreating the account :-)
