Happened after I switched on on Thursday and I've tried rebooting but
that doesn't help. No error messages, just the ~ symbol by the mailbox.

Is this using Apple mail on the iMac? Just sent a test email to my Gmail account from elsewhere and all seems well. I'm using IMAP and running the latest Monterey build on my Mac.

Yes that might work. I've done that in the past and shouldn't do too much
harm, if any, when IMAP is being used.

Next time, look at the Connection Doctor on Mail's Window menu. It is
rather useful, widely unknown, but can save you from the Windows-esque solution of deleting and recreating the account :-)

    Good call! 🙂

Never got anywhere with it when I’ve tried it but then I’m rather impatient! At least with IMAP, wielding the sledgehammer is usually OK in
    this situation.

I did look at that but it claimed everything was fine.
