I'm happy with Dropbox just quietly sitting on the menu bar getting on
with the job. Anyone done the update? What does this "deep integration"
look like? Am worried this is just bloat and will be a resource hog.

As a mainly Apple systems user these days I just use iCloud paying a small monthly fee to get 50GB storage. There’s also iCloud for Windows but I’ve never used it to sync data with my Macs and iDevices. Does Dropbox still install a version of Chrome which presumably runs continuously in the background?

I did not see anything like this so far on my Mac. Check the processes

I stopped using it ages ago too, also finding it to be a resource hog, and far too integrated into the OS.

I still need it as it's the only one that works across all the major OSes
and the free tier is plenty for me.

It also seems to be the lowest level of free space, and one of the least value for money to upgrade.

As I have an Apple One Family account now, with 2TB, most of the freebies
    are just wasted resources.

2TB is the Premier Tier not Family.

If I need an odd small file share I just use my Google account, that still gives 5GB, as does an Outlook account if you want to go that way. MS
OneDrive seems to be less of a hog than Dropbox

Not my experience, here. Although, I have all my work files on OneDrive.

If you are Apple-only that is ok. Does not work in a multi OS-environment.

What is bad is the permanent use of RAM:

    Thunderbird 650.3 MB
    Dropbox 333.0 MB
    Aktivitätsanzeige 75.6 MB

OK, I have not really been following this. I know there was the question on
how to move files to iCloud from the CLI or AppleScript. Is that still the question? If so maybe I can answer it. I did a very quick test with the CLI
(in AppleScript, so I guess both) and it failed. Did not troubleshoot to find out why. Maybe iCloud is special and protected... or I just made a mistake. I did very little testing.

This is an example of his game. If Carroll *truly* thought the answer had been given he could repeat it or point to the post where it was answered (Message
ID or link). He prefers to stretch things out.

And when he asks questions and I respond with such Message IDs or the like he generally snips that. He WANTS to stretch things out and create a circus. Example RIGHT HERE.

Compare that to his unsupported accusations. Or his "but everyone knows" BS.

OK, I have not really been following this. I know there was the question on how to move files to iCloud from the CLI or AppleScript. Is that still the question? If so maybe I can answer it. I did a very quick test with the CLI (in AppleScript, so I guess both) and it failed. Did not troubleshoot to find out why. Maybe iCloud is special and protected... or I just made a mistake. I did very little testing.

    The question remains unanswered! :-(

I thought Carroll posted some CLI commands he at least said worked. I did not test them. Did you? Am I wrong about him posting such (I could be).

Thanks for at least TRYING to simulate the situation.

    You are welcome.

Just tested this, from the command line (have a file called text.txt in Downloads)

    cd ~/Downloads
    mv test.txt ~/Library/Mobile\ Documents/com~apple~CloudDocs/test.txt

    It worked.

    From AppleScript:

All one line, and note the slight change in syntax (the double \\). It does
    ask for permission but works.

    Does that answer the question?

If so maybe I can answer it. I did a very quick test with the CLI >>> (in AppleScript, so I guess both) and it failed. Did not troubleshoot to find
out why. Maybe iCloud is special and protected... or I just made a mistake. I
    did very little testing.

    The question remains unanswered! :-(

I thought Carroll posted some CLI commands he at least said worked. I did not test them. Did you? Am I wrong about him posting such (I could be).

Thanks for at least TRYING to simulate the situation.

    You are welcome.

Just tested this, from the command line (have a file called text.txt in Downloads)

    cd ~/Downloads
    mv test.txt ~/Library/Mobile\ Documents/com~apple~CloudDocs/test.txt

    It worked.

    What did it *DO*?

    From AppleScript:

All one line, and note the slight change in syntax (the double \\). It does ask for permission but works.

    Does that answer the question?

    Not yet!

Not sure what else to say. Can you explain where you are confused? What part? Did you try it? Put a file (test.txt) in your Downloads folder and run the command. What should happen is the file will move from the Downloads folder to the iCloud folder.

It would work with any file (assuming permissions are OK). Not sure what the value of trying a different name. But sure.

I used three different command... moving test.txt, test.png, and test.mp4

The name of the file does not matter.

This is an example of his game. If Carroll *truly* thought the answer had been

Compare that to his unsupported accusations. Or his "but everyone knows" BS.

Why are you still pretending you want the answer?

I *DO* still want the answer!

    Bull.

    Stop being such an asshole!

This is an example of his game. If Carroll *truly* thought the answer had been
given he could repeat it or point to the post where it was answered (Message >> ID or link). He prefers to stretch things out.

And when he asks questions and I respond with such Message IDs or the like he
generally snips that. He WANTS to stretch things out and create a circus.
    Example RIGHT HERE.

Compare that to his unsupported accusations. Or his "but everyone knows" BS.

I'm so sorry that he's been 'on your back' for so many years.

I truly do not understand why. Sometime he seems quite bright.

He is very intelligent... which does not mean he is very smart. He has little self control over his urges. And he targeted me based on his thinking I had done things I had not, tied to his personal life. Add to that, as you have seen, I do not respond to trolling the way most do. Many just walk away -- NOT saying this is not a better way than what I do. Others sink to the level of those trolling them... I think my way is better than that.

'nospam' claims that he has already provided the answer.

Do you see his answer and, if so, is it correct?

I didn't see it, but I don't need to, there's only one way that could
have happened... unless Apple changed things since my OS version.

Then TELL me - then I will know! <rolls eyes>

Yes, but nothing to synchronize and no place to share within my

As I understand it, iCloud doesn't share. Sharing is done with iCloud

*WHO* may have inadvertently put a video file in my iCloud Drive?

I'm suggesting that it was you, inadvertently.

    And why only Savageduck's videos?!!

Give it time, maybe more stuff will appear later, inadvertently. It
needed to happen with your keychain.

A little off topic: but I did have some slight syncing issues with iCloud. The updated files I uploaded did not show on iCloud.com. I rebooted and went back into the folder and they made it there. Maybe it was just taking time -- my
ISP has been flakey recently, not just for me but several neighbors. They are coming this week to check the line.

If you want the CLI and AppleScript scripts I used, I have shared them there
    as well:

If it helps I can even share the AppleScript file (editable).

But really what the file name / type is will not matter. Of course size might mean it takes longer to upload, or you can go over your limit.

Have you tried any of these scripts?

To share: right click a file in your iCloud drive (from the Finder) and go to the "Share" menu. Lots of options there. If you need help I will do what I

I've lost count. Is that the 9th or 10th time this year that you've
wiped your drives and reinstalled your OS? You must be getting good at
    it.

After a wipe/install, how long does it take for your paranoia to creep

No, just the desktop and documents folders.

Depends on your iCloud settings, and if you use the apps (and do not save the files elsewhere).

This is a default setting apparently.

look like? Am worried this is just bloat and will be a resource hog.

My sole use of Dropbox,is to enable me to see certain files on my iPad as well as on the iMac. Before venturing further, I contacted the publishes of the associated software for advice.

They recomment that I do NOT install the "improved" version bnefore they have had a chance to check out any issues that may arise.

    FWIW.

Yup, it used to work without drop-box. Now it needs it I haven't
bothered getting the iPad version. Bit of a pain because I used to be
able to take the iPad to the library when checking things on Ancestry
etc. Bit difficult doing that with a desktop!

It has never been in the Apple Store.

We have used it for over 20 years, building up as complete a history as possible. But we seem to have exhausted the accessible resources now, and
have other issues to concern us.

    But this is seriously OT!

I wish your wife the best of luck. I hope she also uses FindMyPast, FamilySearch, etc.?
