I see that John Lewis Broadband is being discontinued. Their service is provided by PlusNet, but it also turns out that PlusNet discontinued their email provision some time in the last 12 months. I'd like to avoid gmail, so, who provides broadband and still provides POP3 email services?

I'm with PlusNet and my PN email address still works, may be worth
checking as their service is excellent as long as you can manage a
Yorkshire accent
I think their email is IMAP only; I want POP3.

Some clients only implement PO3. (The one operatred by Liz Tuddenham
comes to mind.)

Many providers stopped offering POP3 already.
In a world where useres have usually more than one device to access mail
IMAP offers options that facilitate e-mailing considerably.

Talking to a bod at the PlusNet technical support line this morning, he said he believed the email service was going away but had no date for me. I take it
you've heard nothing.

They haven't said anything to me about it. I see they no longer offer
the option of the tariff that I am on to new customers, but that seems
to be because they are dropping all new services on lines that aren't
rented as part of the package from Plusnet (my line is BT).

many years with no issues at all.
Its aimed at Mobile devices - but I use it in Apple mail on my Macs just
fine
It is only a back-up on IMAP and for "specific" uses so cannot really
comment on functionality etc.. but may be worth a look - IIRC it is
European based
