• Affinity V2 upgrade or not

From Alan B@21:1/5 to All on Sat Nov 12 10:03:08 2022
I see Serif of Nottingham are offering a time limited discount on their v2 products. I do have a copy of Photo v1 but find GC usually meets my limited needs. Is £89.99 a worthwhile one-off purchase for the set?

I think it's incredibly good value depending on how much you will use
it. I bought v2 already. Also I like supporting smaller developers,
    that actually listen to feedback.

I mainly use Publisher and Designer and I don't need to open anyone
else's Adobe files. I just couldn't justify the cost for Adobe CC
    anymore.

Yes, I had thought they were part of some international conglomerate but I
see the management returned them to UK ownership some years ago,

I find Pixelmator Pro easier to use than Affinity Photo, but that might
    just be lack of experience.

I'm a very light user of Photo v1, and tried using it the other day from
within Mac Photos/Edit menu. It crashed a couple of times, then when it stayed open I did find getting anything done a chore, so gave up and did what I
    needed to do in Photos.

I've downloaded the v2 trail - much quicker to load, no crashes, and altough
it seemed a gimmick I do find the 'personas' easier to work with. The
interface looks to be better set out. The DTP programme looks good, but I
don't use it often enough to justify buying. Designer - couldn't fathom that out.

So - suggest giving the trial and whirl.

Yep I'm doing that. I've never had any crashes with Photo V1 but then

I have V1, both on iPad and Desktop, but as I’ve switched more to an iPad based system now, I have found Affinity Photo is not too useful when
working with Photos. The integration in iPadOS is very poor in that regards (none of the extensions capability like on macOS, which is certainly
doable, as others have it), sending images between the two is a right
    kludge.

For most of my needs now, Photos itself does OK, and I use Pixelmator Photo
for most of the extra stuff I need. Sometime it might be Raw Power.

If they ever got opening and saving from a Photos Library sorted, it would
a no brainer, especially with the iPad only version being very reasonable (£8.99 I think).

How are you getting on with RawPower on the iPad? I find it just ...ok.
One issue I have is that if I try to share a photo from Photos (with
the Share Sheet) 95% of the time it starts the import then RP crashes
(this on an Air3). I did ask the dev about it but just got a 'Why don't
you just use the library in RP?' type answer.

I really like Raw Power, but it does seem to be more buggy than most others I’ve tried.

I’ve actually abandoned using it for now, as it has an issue for me that
Nik seems unable to reproduce, or find the cause of. If I open a few Raw
images for editing, it eventually scrambles the preview image on screen in
edit more (it even shows a matching histogram). It’s bad enough that I can’t use it to edit all the images I have in a given album, but it is random, and doesn’t affect every image, or even every album I work in.

It is prone to crashing when using batch modes, Nik suggests it’s just running out of resources on the hardware. But, I don’t get similar issues using other apps - Pixelmator can also do batch edits, and doesn’t crash at all.

I must admit, I was using RPs own library browser, it worked very well for that, and can be handy if you want to filter on different criteria. I do
the same in Pixelmator too, which is very similar looking to Photos.

Most of my work is now done directly in Photos, after trialling lots of options, I have found that Photos isn’t actually all that bad with editing.

I just use the other stuff when I need to.

I bought the whole set a couple of years ago when I got fed up with Adobe (anyone want to buy my Adobe CS4 - legit copy?).

I've loved using it, and couldn't be without it, but can't justify buying the new version (and I mean buying it - there's no upgrade available). Even for
the discounted price of £90 it doesn't offer me that much more than v1.

Quick question: how the heck do I invoke some kind of tool to insert
a speech bubble onto an image open in Photo? The help system describes
using the Callout Ellipse Tool but blowed if I can find it in the numerous items shown above and to the left of the edit window.

I'm not sure how a 2D drawing package could produce 3D files. But
exporting a flat shape which you could then extrude in a 3D package

Yes it would need some changes , perhaps even with repect to using it.
Maybe a future plugin or even as you say extruder software.
I can hope as I'm trying to learn fushion360 which has various oddities that my muscle memory hasn't adapted to yet.

I think it can export to a laser cutter format so I could play with that.
