From Alan B@21:1/5 to All on Sat Dec 10 16:55:05 2022
MacPorts has decided to perform a self-update and my M1 Mac. It's taking absolutely ages! Is this normal? I'm reluctant to kill it as it seems to
be rebuilding a lot of programs. It didn't take that long to install it initially a few months back.

The selfupdate just rsyncs the updated package details across, so is
    mostly network bound.

If you're actually updating packages as well, then there are some low
level packages that changed which are probably causing lots of other
    rebuilds - eg openssl.

I’ve not done myself any favours by installing ports I probably won’t be using. Anyway it seems to be OK now but I will be auditing my installed
    ports and removing some!

Incidentally the fan on my MBP really took off performing the update, particularly when rust was updating.

    An audit is very sensible.

Nice! I don't get any fan noise when rust's building on an M1 Pro or an
M1 Max. Maybe the ambient temperature helps ;-)
