Daft question but presumably all is OK with other Usenet clients?

I used to use Thoth, which worked fine, but that went the way of all
flesh. Ican see the moderation queue (as can anyone who's interested) and >> I can see myposts aren't showing up for moderation, and therefore not
    being rejected.

I don't have any other Usenet clients :(

Get MacSoup! (and if necessary an older mac,
or install it on a partition with an older OSX)

I can (obvs) post to unmoderated groups. I posted a query about this on >> theUsenapp website and the guy who writes the software didn't seem to know
    what amoderated group was.

I don't think tat there is a reason for Andre to need to know.
It's your newsserver that should be configured to pass on postings
to the moderation adress. (by email)
If it isn't confiured for that you should mail the Newsmaster,
and ask him to correct the settings,

That is exactly how it works.
The news server should email incoming articles destined for moderated newsgroups to the moderators.

Apparently, this is not done very much these days.

    Most moderated groups have died.
There still is talk.origins (bot moderated, alive and well)
    and sci.physics.research (article moderated, moribund)
    and no doubt some others.

Most usenet servers still carry them,
but not all of them are configured to forward correctly.
(so they are effectively read only)

Eternal September (free) does a good job, (most of the time)
so you can use that if your standard server doesn't work,
