• Why cant I log into the App store?

From jbrennand@21:1/5 to All on Wed Dec 21 18:21:35 2022
My daughters boyfriend's old MBP is defunct - (smashed screen) so we got
a Late 2013 MBPro retina from eBay - all kosher.

On boot up, it did a clean install of Mavericks 10.9. It did a security
update and then we tried the App store to try and upgrade to Catalina
    but it wont login.

Saying uname/pword are incorrect - they arent - he is logged in on the
iPhone and iPad ! It says go to password reset but after entering the
magic box digits it just gets the spinning wheel of death.

His phone got a magic code - but we never reached a screen where we
    could enter it !

Cherry on the cake... he now has a message on his iPhone saying they
sent him a code to use to log back in .... well that's disappeared into
the ether - not in his email !

Before he calls the Apple support line - anyone got any idea as to what
the hell is going on and is there a simple way in we can try?

    Thanks for any input John

I doubt you're still stuck with this but figured I'd reply so any other
poor bastard like myself can figure out how to resolve this issue far
    quicker than I did...

As you're now aware, this is caused by 2FA (2 factor auth) being
introduced, but not being supported in older versions. And they've then
decided in their infinite wisdom to not allow any way to temporarily
disable it to get around the fact that there's nowhere to put the 2FA code.

    Or so I thought...

    You must enter the following.

Username = Enter your Apple ID as normal.

Password = Enter your password as normal - this will fail.

You'll receive a 2FA code on your iPhone.

Now, try to log in again, but do this.

    Username = Apple ID.

    Password = [yourNormalPassword][2FACode]

    Password eg. sUperSecretPw432765

Where 432765 was the 2FA code.

You'll then be logged into the App Store and able to install all the way
up to Monterey directly from Yosemite (which I am in the process of doing).

I am going to bloody bed now. That was way too hard to find Apple, tsk tsk. ______________________________________________________________________

    Hello John

If the 'new' laptop had been properly prepared for sale, on boot-up it
should have said "Hello" in lots of different languages.

I sugggest to contact the e-Bay seller and ask for his/her Apple ID and password so that you can carry out the exercise yourself.

    This is the procedure:- https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201065

You will, I'm sure, appreciate that someone wishing to sell a 'stolen'
laptop could do so easily on eBay.

    Good luck!
