• OT : Starbucks new policy

From Davey@21:1/5 to All on Wed Jan 15 12:36:03 2025
Starbucks is now reported to be about to insist that anybody using its facilities buys something. I would in principle have some sympathy with
this, after all, the facilities cost something to maintain.

But: I used to fly frequently out of Detroit Metro Airport. There was
the huge modern terminal, complete with a mini Metro line, built for
NorthWest Airlines (now part of Delta), and a little old terminal where everybody else flew from. For a morning flight, one had to check in, go
through security, and then twiddle one's thumbs for over an hour. There
was one coffee stall open, a Starbucks. You just wanted something to
wet your whistle, but not enough to require a subsequent trip to the
toilets, or heaven forbid, a trip to the toilets while on board the
'plane. These were not large aircraft. The coffee stall had a display
of various cup sizes, ranging from small to medium to large to
gigantic. Of this range, the smallest on offer was a 'Tall', which was
12 ounces of coffee, most of which had to be either thrown away, or
left for the cleaners to deal with. What a waste, and what a rip-off.
The 'Short', 8 ounces, would have been fine, or even the 'Demi', 3
    ounces, for any Italians.

So I have no sympathy with Starbucks wishing to save their money, when
they are good at extracting ours from our pockets.

They have a menu-hack item available as an 8oz "Short" cup, but it's
never advertised. There's also a 3oz "Demi" cup but that's just for
espresso shot(s), not any other drink.

I think you can ask for a filter coffee for $cheap. They don't advertise
    it.

Anyhow, at an airport the toilets are presumably run by the airport not the franchisee, and this policy won't apply?

I used not to, but I think it's changed for the better. (too many EV
charging points are beside Starbucks, so I got a bit forced to re-try.)

Yes, I listed those in my OP. but they certainly were not
available/advertised in the terminal. The display showed size(s)
smaller than the 'Tall', but they could not/would not serve them.

No, I was just commenting on my experience with Starbuscks as a vendor
of coffee. I, and many other early morning flyers wanted a small
coffee, but it wasn't available at the only coffee seller in the
    terminal.

One time flying a very small plane from a very regional airport, they

They are, or at least were, also good at avoiding UK tax by
pretending, quite legitimately, to be operating as a franchise in the
UK and repatriating most of their profits as tax-deductible royalties.

THere's a story about a LoganAir flight (Scottish islands) many years ago,
with the pilot separated from the (few) passengers by just a curtain. No specific staff uniform.

Pilot made himself scarce before boardding, then arrived and just sta in a spare passenger seat, constantly looking at his watch and complaining (no

    pilot's seat and took off.

Some of the passengers knew him by sight, but some didn't...

    Nice one!

When my wife and I were on a local flight from Fairbanks, Alaska, to
north of the Arctic Circle, the co-pilot told us to look out of the
window so we could see the dotted line as used on maps to show the
position on the ground of the Circle.

I flew on one like that! ISTR that it had de Havilland propellers. The
pilot flew with the cabin door open, and it was easy to see we were flying
at 18000ft, and right next to the altimeter was a notice saying “Air conditioner not to be used above 14000ft”. The aircon was on…but we landed OK at Dulles.

Yes, I know it can be deceiving with tapered cups with a different
final diameters. The short measure is not linear with the depth between
the top of a cup and the top of the liquid if the cups are a different
diameter and with a different taper.

Best way to deceive is not show whether the larger cups are empty at the
