Not answering your question but I've found the adhesive on these tape
LEDs not to be too good and they start pulling away from the surface
they are stuck to within a month or two. Possibly fitted to the top of
a kitchen cabinet is OK where gravity keeps it in place but not hanging
it from under the cabinet. Where I've fitted it horizontally I've had to
resort to some hot glue to reinforce the stickiness of the LED tape.

Perhaps consider fixing dedicated aluminium channel to the wall/ceiling, fitting the LED tape in the channel and then fitting a diffusing lens cover.

I wouldn't rely on the adhesive to prevent it drooping, look at the

A few years back I bought 2 rolls of red coloured sticky tape off ebay,
which I used to hold a 5mtr led strip in place. It is still there now
with no signs of comming off the wall

There's no obvious answer. Try it out both ways - using some BluTac.

Then let us know which you liked and why.

Agree about adhesive being a bit naff.

Just a thought. On the wall, turning the corner is just a bend in the
    tape; on the ceiling it ain't so easy ;-}

Depends on what you want to achieve... to show every imperfection in the ceiling, then fit to the wall, while to reveal all the flaws in the
wall, put them on the ceiling! :-)

(a raking light in close proximity to any notionally flat surface is
    very unflattering!)

Hidden behind something like on the top of a picture rail or on top of a cabinet, pointed up and out toward the ceiling however can give quite a
    nice diffuse reflected light source.

And price is no indicator - some of the stuff sold expensively as

Often with LED strip your eye focuses on the individual LEDS hence why
it's probably better to diffuse the light and/or have the tape hidden
and to only view the reflection from a light coloured surface.

There's coving which is designed to reflect hidden LED tape off the wall to give a good light spread. As seen in fancy hotels:

Is there a legit supplier of small quantities? Farnell sell it by the roll, but the cheapest roll (3m x 19mm) is £20, and you might not want a full
    roll.
