    However the Vatican has fielded armies (often mercenaries) and invaded
    lots of places over a period of several hundred years.


    They did less damage than the British Empire. Thank God we don't have an equivalent of Bradford or East Birmingham in Italy.

    I'm not sure how one would quantify that first sentence, and I don't
    understand what you are aiming at with the second.
