Recently on sale in Lidl. (Referred to by someone else as Bootlace
    Ferule Crimper)

Anyone bought one? I bought one yesterday and am finding the
    instructions a bit opaque!

    I agree they are appalling.

The set comes with 1800 ferules ranging in diameter from very small to
quite large. The tool has 3 settings - switched by turning a cogged
wheel, which requires a locating screw to be removed and replaced after changing the setting.

There's no clue as to what the settings are for - presumably for
different sizes of ferule, but there are a lot nore than 3 sizes.

The jaws are self adjusting and accommodate all sizes without manual adjustment, albeit with far more force being required for the larger
    ferrules.

The screw locked adjustment is for tool wear compensation. If you find that
the ferrules are loose enough to be easily removable after crimping then
you can use that adjustment to tighten the criming action (or in reverse if they are over-crimping).

    Anyone managed to decipher it?

How long will 1800 ferules (many presumably too large
for typical DIY use) last ?.

Is there a way of crimping them on without the special
    tool ?.

    I think a long time...

Is there a way of crimping them on without the special

.. oddly I paid a pound more for mine but only got 1250 ferules..

.. but I think its safe to say both ferules and crimpers are readily
    available .....

How long is a piece of string? I've had a similar kit for a few years
and found that I tend to use the same size every time so one size is
going to run out whereas other sizes will be unused.

Similar kits (crimping tool + range of ferrules) can be purchased from
    Ebay for around £16

The larger diameter plastic insulated section in some instances prevents
the ferrule from being inserted fully into a connector. For these
instances I've also invested in some bootlace ferrules.

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/395227207086
    there are other Ebay sellers.

Is there a way of crimping them on without the special
    tool ?.

The crimping tool crimps on 4 sides* so I'm not sure what you would use
to get the same result. As these kits, or the crimping tool alone, is relatively cheap why not use the proper tool to get a reliable result.

    * some crimping pliers crimp on 6 sides
Typically 4 side crimpers cost around £13 and 6 sided £26 - Ebay chinese stock.

Professional quality 6 sided crimping pliers are around £200(ish)
