• Aids For the Elderly

From Jeff Gaines@21:1/5 to All on Wed Apr 2 14:59:12 2025
Following on from the recent discussion about making life a bit easier as
we age I got myself a 9" high footstool from Amazon, thinking being it
would help me get out of the bath which is sometimes a struggle.

It's a folding stool and the first time I used it it collapsed when I
picked it up and it was a right faff. I got some plastic glue and applied
it to the hinges but it didn't seem very strong so in the end I put 2 x
brass screws through each end of the hinge and it seemed nice and sturdy.

Tried it out this morning. It stayed fixed but unknown to me it turned
over as I put it in the bath and as I went to sit on it one of the legs
started to insert itself in a somewhat delicate place. I think I set a
world record for getting out of the bath, and I didn't need the stool!

Incidentally, I gave up smoking 12 years and 2 months ago and just worked
out that at today's prices I have saved about Ł77,000 (20 a day).
Accepting that prices have gone up substantially it's still a lot of
money. Can anybody tell me which account it is in please?

I take full responsibility for what happened - that is why the person that
    was responsible went immediately.

Maybe something like this with sticky feet and decent strong

Excuse my language but I wouldn't want one of those legs up me, missus!

The operative word in that example is “shower”, those chairs will be no good in a bath as baths do not have a flat surface for it to stand on.
Short on changing your bath for a walk in with a door and built in seating which requires to remain in the bath until it has emptied the only other solution if you want to keep your existing bath is use one of those devices that is a belt attached to the floor and the wall. The belt is lowered into
the bath and you sit on it. When you need to get out a winch usually
electric winds up the belt thus raising you into a seating position that
you can easily stand up from. I will try to find an example tomorrow.

Here is an example of what I was thinking of. I notice the supplier also
has some specific chairs for baths but like all these specialist devices
they do come at a price.

My technique for getting out of the bath is to turn over, so that I am
kneeling in it. With hands on both sides, I can bring one knee forward
    and then simply stand up.

There was one of those fitted in my previous house, first thing I took
out! The 9" stool will work if I get it the right way up, once I am seated
on that I can get out.
