We are consumers, interested in a good workmanship, good materials,
good price.
Checkatrade is a dating agency for finding contacts with
professionals with levels of cut grabbing intermediates paid
in-between. None of this money goes into the quality of the job or it
seems the pockets of the professional.
A bit like the beef between Spotify, recording companies and
musicians.
I had a workman visit a few years ago, did some good remedial work
and left - with a bye that he was actually a sub-contractor to a firm
that has bought leads from Checkatrade. He gave me his own mobile
number, and suggested next time I call him direct ...
Called, him a few days ago - he came out, had a look at the job. Now
it seems either he is too busy, or I plain got ghosted.
Today's wisdom is when looking for a pro, is either direct word of
mouth (locally here nobody dares recommending anyone), or go hunting
though the socials - youtube/instagram/tiktok (yuk).
Is that it?

I have looked at Checkatrade, and decided that any company that needs
to join such a group is probably not very good. I have done very well
here by asking for recommendations, from people or businesses whom I
already know, and also by looking in the local Parish Magazine. Anybody
doing a bad job will soon find that word-of-mouth works for good
reports and bad reports. I don't do 'social media', so I can't comment
on that.
