• Adhesive for plastic

From Scott@21:1/5 to All on Sun Apr 6 09:55:49 2025
The bracket for my dashcam has become detached from the mount (not the
mount from the windscreen) so I am minded to glue them together. (1)
Some glues cannot be used with polyethelene or polyurathane. I believe
the plastic in the mount is ABS, so am I okay? (2) What is the best
adhesive to use. I believe two-part epoxy is the strongest, but is it
fiddly to use with lots of wastage? I suspect superglue is a tame for
a big surface. What about Gorilla glue that gets advertised?

If it is ABS then a solvent glue can be used, I do not know if all solvents will work but you can get ones specific for ABS but it will come at a price
if it is only a one off.

ABS responds well to acetone (nail varnish remover]

IT is a very handy solvent to have around the place anyway.

    Every D-I-Y-er probably needs
    - Ethanol (methylated spirtist)
    - Isopropanol (IPA)
    - Acetone
    - White Spirit
    - Cellulose solvent - (MEK etc).
    - Naptha (Lighter fluid)

Buy em as you need em, and eventually you have a shelf full of things
that get other things to dissolve.

For ABS 'PVC glue' as used on waste pipes etc. works well, it will
sovent weld ABS pretty much permanently as strong as the surrounding
    plastic.

I have a bottle marked methylated spirits. It contains a decent amount
of methanol and various other things. Do not under any account drink it.

I do have a supply of ethanol, but I don't use it as a solvent!

Methylated spirits is ethanol plus enough methanol to make it
technically undrinkable. Also used to have aniline to make it purple.

Perpex can be welded with chloroform.
