• My5, ALL4 and itvX vanished from 2016 Samsung TV

From Andrew@21:1/5 to All on Tue Apr 15 19:47:33 2025
Annoyingly, my Samsung UE22H5600 has deleted the three Smart
Apps that I only ever use (sometimes).

Googling the problem shows many people with the same issue
and Samsung say TV's from 2014 backwards no longer support
these three catchup apps, but my TV was bought in 2017 and
    it is a 2016 model.

Navigating to the VIDEO section under CATEGORIES is a huge
list of junk apps, including France24, Amazon Prime and Netflix
and lots more, plus iPlayer and BBC News but that's it.

Does anyone else have a Samsung TV that has done the same ?.

It's a few months since I tried to use My5 on this TV so I don't
    know when they vanished.

Failing that, are there any external catchup devices that
insert into an HDMI port that a) use Cat5 ethernet and
    b) Don't stick out too far because this TV is on a window
cill and I need to pull curtains closed behind it and
    c) Full HD only, no need for 4K.

All the Roku boxes seem to use wireless ethernet and
seem to project out behind the set.

You can use an HDMI male to female extension cable to move the stick
somewhere else, although there are lots in the 'box' form factor that use regular HDMI cables and support ethernet. I think a regular ethernet cable might be rather heavy for the 'stick' form factor.

There are many boxes available but most of the Android TV ones are spying/ad infested Chinesium. The two I might recommend are the Nvidia Shield devices and the Apple TV, although neither are that cheap. One downside about Apple TVs is that they don't support subtitles on iPlayer (a spat between the BBC
and Apple) if that bothers you.

4K is more or less a standard feature nowadays (been around for 10 years),
so I wouldn't go out of your way to look for a full HD box.

You can get a short HDMI connector cable (male - female) which will
    remove the "sticking out" problem.

Ours must be similar vintage, and it did updates that made the user
interface crap, with apps that didn't work.

We added a secondhand Humax HDR Fox-T2 which is great for standard
channels. We now have a Roku Express, which is a tiny box with an HDMI
cable. Stick it anywhere near (ours is on top). But it needs wireless.

Yes, we are mainly wired (27 fixed sockets around the house, most in use)
