Can anyone recommend a system to look at? I'd prefer something smart

When did you last change the rechargeable backup battery in the control
panel? They only tend to last 5 years (or less). Although the terminal
voltage may indicate the battery is OK it cannot instantly supply the
power when you get a small dropout of the mains supply and this can
    trigger the alarm.

Thanks. Probably six or seven years ago but the system is on its last
legs and owes us nothing so It'll be replaced as soon as I can find
    something decent.

If "smart" means you can monitor and control it remotely then I'm
all in favour, but if it means you are ripping out a hardwired
system for one where each sensor is wireless and relies on a
battery, then I'd consider that a downgrade.

Don't know anything about Home Assistant but I recently updated my
system with one made by Orisec - it's what the installer specialises
    in.
I'm very satisfied. I had the wifi module installed, so I can access
it by an app and it will notify me if anything triggers while I'm
away. The installer saved me £100 by saying that the existing sensors
were still current and did not require changing. He also sorted out a
couple of bodges made by the previous installer. The existing wiring
    was reused.
