• OT: Trying to cancel a policy

From Davey@21:1/5 to All on Thu May 22 12:57:57 2025
When I bought my tablet some years ago, it came with a free 'starter'
warranty. After the free period, I continued it at £3.99 p.m. until I
realised that it wasn't worth it any more, and also they put the price
    up, to £5.99.
I sent three messages trying to cancel the insurance, but never
received an acknowledgement for any of them. So I went into online
banking, and cancelled the Direct Debit. And suddenly, I received a
formal message telling me that the policy was being cancelled. No
    explanation.
This was with Pacifica Warranty. Not a good advertisement for them.

Their reviews on TP are surprisingly good.

Beware any TP review that names a specific person. Few people are going to take down the name of the person they spoke to and then write a review
naming them - for one thing any name comes at the beginning of the
conversation long before you know whether they're going to be good or not.

Reviews with people's names in, for non-physical businesses anyway, are
always likely to be because they've actively solicited them. That means
they can game the positive scores by only soliciting them for jobs which
they didn't mess up. In this example many reviews are including the staff member's number, which screams solicitation.

(although I'll say one thing though, most of these reviews appear to be for service calls. Many insurance companies' TP is full of people saying how
easy it was to give them money, which tends to drown out the few saying how badly claims were handled)

Not necessarily the case in the service industry. I could name the
person who kept my mobile phone charger that I left at Premier Inn,
packaged it with my name on it and greeted me a week later when I went
    to collect it.

Yes, but if you called the Premier Inn customer helpline and were greeted
with 'Hi, I'm Debbie, how can I help you' would you remember to write a
review mentioning Debbie 4056 in it? What about Rajesh (Mumbai) or Alexa (robot)? People only write such reviews because the company solicited them.

That's different from a physical business where you interacted with members
of staff and might have genuine feedback to give. But if you were doing it genuinely then every review wouldn't have the staff member's ID number in
    it.

Pacifica has responded, with an apology. It also says that my debit
for the mis-taken premium has been refunded. When I see it in my bank
account, I may edit my Trustpilot review.

    It's always worth complaining.

Good idea, every business makes the occasional mistake, what you need
to know in choosing a business is how quickly and well they fix it.
