• Temporary Car Insurance

From Smolley@21:1/5 to All on Wed Jul 9 07:56:59 2025
I am trying to insure my son to drive my car for 15 Days. The £100
temporary insurance quote doesn't stipulate a named driver, but it looks
    quite authentic.

Does anyone have experience of taking out temporary car insurance.

Also it didn't ask many questions, compared to my own insurance.

I would extend my own policy so using a company I know, weird things can
happen if something is insured twice.

    Yes.

    Indeed not.

I took out temporary for my nephew when he was over for a few days. All
I needed to do was send a scan of his Finnish full driving license....

That sounds high, but if he's under 25 or whatever that may increase the premium.

Yes, I think it was 30-40 pound territory (~2019) but I don't remember
exactly how long for. There are a number of companies offering it now, so
    do shop around.

Once you start going beyond a month it's better to look at annual policies, perhaps cancelling and getting a refund minus fees.

You could also ask your own insurer how much to add your son to your policy
for that period. Although if he has a crash it'll affect your NCB / claims history.

Also it didn't ask many questions, compared to my own insurance.

Not surprising - they aren't so fussy for such a short period of time.

What is the logic of that? Someone with poor driving skills driving in
another country on the opposite side of the road in an unfamiliar
vehicle could cause a serious accident in the first hour.

For a short period of time, things like your job or your marital status
don't make very much difference to the risk profile so it's not worth their while asking them, and the more questions they ask the more customers are likely to give up and go elsewhere. They do ask about driving related
things like your licence and previous accidents etc.

Presumably for the things they don't ask about they just price up the policy
to compensate. eg if it was a £500 annual policy and the marital status
makes say a £20 difference, then on a £30 weekly policy the difference is only £1.20. So maybe just bump up everyone's policy by £1 to cover the average situation, and if your customer happens to be a super risky 14th
time divorcee it's averaged out by all the customers who are boringly
married but paid an extra pound.

I should specify a driver. That seems very cheap. I think it was nearer £15/day..

Does anyone have experience of taking out temporary car insurance.

    yes it was around that...

I added my son to my car policy. I think it was £200 for a whole year.

Albeit some time back I put someone who had just passed the test on my
policy and it was a fairly low additional cost.

The semi hidden cost may be the increased compulsory excess for young or inexperienced drivers in the event of a claim.
