Great. How can I get Meta to stop pumping targeted adverts at me ?

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1en1yjv4dpo

Facebook has agreed to stop targeting adverts at an individual user using personal data after she filed a lawsuit against its parent company, tech
    giant Meta.

Tanya O'Carroll, 37, who lives in London and works in the tech policy and
human rights sector, said it would open a "gateway" for other people
wanting to stop the social media company from serving them adverts based
    on their demographics and interests.

The Information Commissioner's Office, the UK's data watchdog, said
online targeted advertising should be considered direct marketing.

Great! So nine years after GDPR and goodness-knows-how-many years
after our own legislation put consent out in front in these
arrangements, one woman has reached a settlement in a court case which
means Meta will now agree to comply with the law for her and her
alone. Other, offputtingly expensive, options may in future be made
available so that other users may pay to have Meta do what they ought
to have been doing since 2016.

This doesn't read to me like the great success story that it's being
    touted as.

And in the process lose contact with all those family members,

in prioritising the sheer convenience of Facebook in terms of ease

Which rather overlooks the one real advantage of Facebook as noted
above. That it already has an installed user base numbered in billions, including the likes of Aunt Doris, Uncle Bert, and the upper Dithering Allotment Society

Who despite all its faults, are unlikely to switch en masse to
either Telegram or Signal ; so as to be able to rub shoulders with large numbers of pornographers or dissidents or take part in White House briefings alongside JD Vance.

The billionaire philanthropist remark was intended a joke.

The existence of free open source software and of free or pirated software generally, has somehow encouraged the belief that the facilities afforded by warehouses full of humming servers all burning up electricity should somehow also be free.

Even if bankrolled by Sir Jim Ratcliffe. "He shuts canteens"

Not in ulm, but some other groups are 99% adverts.

Really? I must be very lucky in my choice of newsgroups.

(Or were you being pedantic about adverts being pushed vs pulled?)

No. Intrusive adverts do feel like they are being pushed at me,
    regardless of my wishes.

    Slightly OT:

Remember the adverts alongside the Tube escalators? A significant
proportion of them were for womens' underwear and "foundation garments".

A girlfriend of the time (1970s) bitterly complained about this, and
seemed genuinely surprised when I pointed out that they were not aimed
at me, but certainly *were* aimed at her and other females.

The ads must have worked, else they would have been voluntarily
discontinued (because not good business). And they could only work in
the sense of women buying the advertised articles of clothing.

    Prudent, perhaps.

And regardless of whether you actually pulled them?
