• Odd experience of looking for quote ?

From Jethro_uk@21:1/5 to All on Sat Jun 14 09:41:39 2025
I recall the quote from Lord Devlin about juries, parliaments and
    justice. It's very succinct.

However, today, despite a few variants of the keywords in a choice of
search engines, I appear to be unable to locate a source for the full
    quote.

I wonder (a) if anyone could provide it, please ? and (b) whether anyone
else is surprised by the lack of results ? Given they were there a few
years ago (how else would I know this quote ?).

    This?

    | Each jury is a little parliament. The jury sense is the parliamentary
    | sense. I cannot the see the one dying and the other surviving. The
    | first object of any tyrant in Whitehall would be to make parliament
    | utterly subservient to his will; and the next to overthrow or diminish
    | trial by jury, for no tyrant could afford to leave a subject’s freedom
    | in the hands of twelve of his countrymen. So that trial by jury is
    | more than an instrument of justice and more than one wheel of the
    | constitution: it is the lamp that shows that freedom lives.

Lots of hits for the first sentence.

As I said, I remember getting the full quote (for which I thank you)

"This bloke" say the search engines "is clearly not in the market to
buy a Devlin so we are not going to make any money out of his search.
So sod him, we'll put the first usable reference somewhere in the
middle of p.98 of the results."

    "Trail By Jury" ?

    quote:

As Lord Devlin famously said in his book Trial by Jury: "The first object of any tyrant
in Whitehall would be to make parliament utterly subservient to his will; and the next
to overthrow or diminish the right to trial by jury, for no tyrant could afford to leave
a subject's freedom in the hands of 12 of his countrymen."

    "Trail By Jury" ?

Or even the "New Improved Edition" - "Trial by Jury"
