• Solicitor Registration

From Jeff Gaines@21:1/5 to All on Tue Jul 22 13:52:34 2025
Is the SRA the only body that can register solicitors in England?

I have had a discussion with a person who I believe is a solicitor but he doesn't seem to be registered with the SRA.

The short answer is yes. The longer, but unhelpful, answer is that the
roll of solicitors is administered by the courts.

    Problem, then.

    Firms can employ non-solicitors, ofc.

Could they be a Legal Executive, which has its own certifying
    organisation?

    Yes.

The easiest way to see if a person is a solicitor is to use this Law

It is of course an offence to impersonate a solicitor. But there are
many legal executives, paralegals and other lawyers employed at law
firms who are not breaking the law so long as they do not claim to be solicitors and are (in some scenarios) working under the supervision of
    a solicitor.

To act as a "Practising Solicitor" a solicitor needs a Practising
Certificate issued by the SRA, for which they pay a fee and
    which also results in registration.

Practising basically means dealing with members of the public,
other legal professionals and the Courts in the role of a
    solicitor

However a person potentially could still be a qualified solicitor
but without being registered or in possession of a current
practising certificate; possibly if they're working as legal
executives or advisors, within a firm of some kind.

Many thanks for all the replies :-)

I can't expand, I am not planning to use the person concerned but he
refers to himself as a solicitor.

You could consider reporting him to the SRA. https://www.sra.org.uk/consumers/problems/fraud-dishonesty/bogus-fake-solicitors/

In doing so, you might be performing a public service.

And if you are on the opposing side, and your adversary is represented
by a bogus solicitor, remember to refuse to pay him any of his costs if
you end up settling the claim.
