Presumably used by the 235Mc part.

For it's age, it really does look like it's in excellent condition.

    Brian

    No.

Hertz’s first experiments were using spark gaps, in the 1880s

Marconi used a spark transmitter for his first trans Atlantic transmission
    in 1901.

Regenerative receivers were invented a decade later by Armstrong.

Prior to that, coherers, Marconi’s magnetic detectors, crystals, leaky grid valve based detectors, were still used.

    Brian

    No.

Hertz’s first experiments were using spark gaps, in the 1880s

Marconi used a spark transmitter for his first trans Atlantic
    transmission
    in 1901.

Regenerative receivers were invented a decade later by Armstrong.

Prior to that, coherers, Marconi’s magnetic detectors, crystals, leaky >>> grid
valve based detectors, were still used.

Didn’t you ever read about the history of radio?

Quenching applied to spark gaps before it applied to valve oscillating circuits. I had vaguely though it was to do with switching the transmission on
an off, but a brief google suggests it was more to do with increased efficiency of transfer of power to a tuned circuit. Which makes me wonder if quenching of regenerative receivers is more to do with sensitivity than stopping them oscillating. I freely admit to general ignorance on the topic, but I did know that quenched sparks were a thing!

The ‘best’ (in simple terms) way to operate a regen is to keep it on the edge of oscillation.

The quench control is a way of helping maintain this state.

I’ve seen the term used in relation to coherers. As I recall, to automatically trigger the circuit which reset the coherer but I confess I’m not sure. However, 19 sets had a regen Rx for VHF (200 or so MHz I think)
    used for short range use.

Quenching was used in spark transmitters to extinguish the spark, either
