Best thing I ever did was getting rid of my G - took decades off my age.

In the early eighties, I received G8LUK. It lapsed and
I asked Ofcom to resurect it as I couldn't round up my cert,
they decided I couln't prove who I was, passport was no help
they wouldn't let me have it back. They did give me G5LUK
    though. Sigh

AIUI, they have started (re)issuing callsigns that are no longer
allocated (either because they lapsed several years ago, and show no
signs of being renewed, or because the original owner has died), or have
never been allocated (eg the latter half of the G2+3s). If so, and
assuming that G8LUK has not been issued to anyone else, they should now
be able to let you have it (provided you trade in your G5).

On the other hand, there's no shame in having a G5+3. Many Full passes
are now claiming them instead of being issued with a new-fangled M.

It has to be said that Ofcom's amateur licence issuing system now is
    very peculiar.

I probably have a call book with G8LUK in it,

He appears here with a Brighton address

    https://archive.org/details/Winter_1978_Foreign_Amateur_Callbook/page/220 /mode/2up

Offcom usually accept a callbook entry.

G5LUK is easier on CW anyway.

That looks fairly conclusive. [I did have a look in my collection of
RSGB callbooks, but G8LUK had either not yet been issued, or after it
would have been issued, was absent.]
