• OT: Pocket radio with LW

From Ottavio Caruso@21:1/5 to All on Thu Jul 8 09:50:54 2021
    Hi,

It's off topic but I hope you can help. This panel is probably the only
one that can understand this question.

I am looking for a pocket (literally it must fit my pocket) radio with longwave, as I have to pick a French radio (France Inter - 162 khz) and
I don't want/can't afford to use mobile data.

I don't expect they make radios like these any more. The closest are
some Degen/Tecsun/Xhdata multiband but they are not really pocket.

Any suggestion will be appreciated, although it's most likely mission impossible.

Assuming you're able to build your own, may I suggest this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/184440070119
They only take about an hour to put together and I'm sure that a few
extra turns on the ferrite coil winding will bring the band down from MW
    to LW.

Yes it's gone. I just checked the WebSDR. I can hear ROU SRR Antena
Satelor on 153KHz and RTL Luxembourg in French on 234KHz. RTE 1 on
    252KHz is missing.

    Not many left now.

Roberts Radio make a nice little pocket-sized radio. Look for 'cricket',
'Test Match Special', etc and you should land on the model'

    There's Long Wave and FM.

Any chance you have a link, because I can't find it. Thanks. However,
I'd settle for a MW-FM only, as long as it's pocket and rechargeable.

I got it from Hughes (Electrical). I've just had a look and Yahoo keeps sticking its unwanted nose in my searches.

I'llHave another go later, but key words would be TMS (maybe Test Match Special), LW and FM

Seems a fair price for a niche product. LW is increasingly unpopular, and has never been a major thing in America.

For that price, I can get an entry level XHdata or Tecsun, which will outperform the poor Roberts by a mile and they are marginally bigger.

There's a Tecsun PL-606 on Amazon for about £40 with LW and a PL-360 for
about the same price, the latter bigger than the Roberts but comes with
a belt clip and it's USB rechargeable too.

Nice radios, but more expensive than your "no chance" £35!

There's a Tecsun PL-606 on Amazon for about £40 with LW and a PL-360 for

Nice radios, but more expensive than your "no chance" £35!

Old thread. Wonder if the OP has purchased the Tecsun or XHdata SI Labs one-chip DSP solutions yet and found it lacking in LW sensitivity due to
the inferior ferrite rod antenna? A proper superhet with filters, and a dedicated LW winding on the ferrite rod would be a better choice to be
able to hear more than just R4 on 198kHz.

No, I have (temporarily) given up on the idea.
