• Free Doctor Bike events are back this summer

From swldxer1958@gmail.com@21:1/5 to All on Tue May 16 05:53:28 2023
A calendar of ‘wheelie’ good Dr Bike workshops has been organised by North East Lincolnshire Council and its delivery partner Equans, who are once more teaming up with Cycle Hub Lincs to ensure that your bikes are in safe working condition this
    summer.

Taking place across a number of venues in the borough, these events should encourage residents to dust off their bikes and head out into the open.

The Doctor Bike team will be attending each event to carry out free bike safety checks. Its group of mechanics will be able to fix most minor repairs for free, while you wait, or will offer advice on how to fix more serious problems.

Dr Bike will be attending the following venues between May and September, 2023:

    Franklin College – Wednesday 17 May and Wednesday 14 June – 11am to 1.30pm
Grimsby Leisure Centre – Thursday 25 May, Thursday 29 June, Thursday 27 July and Thursday 31 August – 3pm to 5.30pm
Duke of York Gardens – Tuesday 30 May, Tuesday 27 June, Tuesday 25 July and Tuesday 29 August – 3pm to 5.30pm
Littlecoates Community Centre – Wednesday 31 May, Wednesday 28 June, Wednesday 26 July, and Wednesday 30 August – 3pm to 5.30pm
Waltham Parish Council – Thursday 1 June, Thursday 6 July, Thursday 3 August, and Thursday 7 September – 3pm to 5.30pm
Grant Thorold Park – Tuesday 6 June, Tuesday 4 July, Tuesday 1 August, and Tuesday 5 September – 3pm to 5.30pm

Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for environment and transport, said: “It is great to be working with Cycle Hub Lincs again. These workshops help to ensure bikes are in safe working condition for the summer, which is of particular
importance to those taking to the roads.

“Cycling has great health and wellbeing benefits, and it would be nice to see more people out and about during the warmer months.”

Tim Gooseman, senior transport officer at Equans, added: “In recent years, many children have been encouraged to walk or cycle to school and it’s extremely important that their bikes receive a safety check before the new school year. These events
also provide general information about cycling in the borough, which is beneficial for everyone.”

To take part, please book a free ticket online at eventbrite.co.uk/o/equans-amp-cycle-hub-lincs-32941748313 - external site

. Priority will be given to those who attend with a pre-booked ticket.

Participants can book tickets for up to three bikes, but each bike must have its own ticket. There will be a 30-minute time slot printed on each ticket. Please try to be there within that period, to help keep any queues to a minimum.

Places at Doctor Bike events fill up quickly, so be sure to book early, but please cancel your ticket if for any reason you are no longer able to attend. That way, your space can be given to someone else.

Unfortunately for the politically-correct message, there seems little difference in the mortality statistics between Lardy Britain and
    CycleUtopia Holland.

    Dutch five major diseases

THE FIVE MOST COMMON DISEASES IN THE NETHERLANDS

The Netherlands is located in Northwestern Europe and has a population of
about 17 million. Non-communicable diseases, like in many other parts of
the world, increasingly affect the Dutch and cause about 90 percent of
deaths in the country. The following are the most common diseases in the Netherlands.

1. Neoplasms

The Netherlands has the 12th highest rate of cancer in the world, in part
due to increased awareness and diagnosis. Thirty-three percent of deaths in
the country are due to cancer. Lung cancer is the most prevalent, followed
by breast cancer and intestinal cancer. Skin cancer and pancreatic cancer
cases also are increasing, and, between 2005 and 2015, the mortality rate
of pancreatic cancer increased by 12 percent.

During that same period, the mortality rate of lung cancer, which is
especially common because of smoking, increased by six percent. The
premature death rates and prevalence of lung cancer, pancreatic cancer and breast cancer are significantly higher in the Netherlands than in similar countries.

2. Cardiovascular Disease (CVD)

CVD causes 29 percent of deaths in the Netherlands. Although the mortality
rate of CVD has declined since the second half of the 20th century, the
burden remains. Ischemic heart disease is especially crippling to the
country. In 2007, it was estimated that about 730,400 people were living
    with ischemic heart disease.

3. Chronic Respiratory Diseases

Chronic respiratory diseases cause six percent of deaths. Lung diseases in
the Netherlands are especially prevalent because of the high percentage of smokers. About 28 percent of people in the country smoke. Because of this, there are roughly 23,000 lung related deaths per year and over one million
    lung patients.

In addition to lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is also prevalent in the county. Between 2005 and 2015, the mortality rate of
COPD increased by 9.5 percent. The premature death rate is significantly
higher in the Netherlands compared to similar countries. COPD can lead to emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

4. Mental and Behavioral Disorders

Mental health is important to recognize in the Netherlands. Depressive disorders are a leading cause of death and disability in the country. In
2014, about eight percent of the population claimed to be suffering from depression, accounting for more than one million people.

5. Alzheimer’s Disease

Dementia affects 1.47 percent of the Dutch population. In 2012, about
245,568 people lived with dementia. Alzheimer’s disease is especially
common as the mortality rate increased by 18.6 percent between 2005 and
2015. Risk factors of Alzheimer’s include age, genetics, traumatic brain injury and mild cognitive impairment. Research also suggests that cardiovascular disease and education level may be linked to the disease.

Poor lifestyle choices are commonly associated to many of these diseases. Smoking, for example, is a major risk factor and something that should be recognized when addressing rates of diseases such as lung cancer and COPD. Improving health education is one step in helping decrease the rates of
these common diseases in the Netherlands.

A school has been forced to recruit a security guard to tackle selfish drivers who ignore parking rules.

Some parents repeatedly ignored requests not to jeopardise children's safety by using a staff car park at West Ewell Infants School, in Ewell, Surrey - and have even abused staff who have asked them not to.

The school said it needed to safeguard its children, following an incident a week earlier in which a fire engine, which was called to a non-emergency incident at the school, could not enter the car park because it was so congested with parents’ cars.

Parents were sent letters warning them that a security guard would be stationed in its car park, during the school day, to prevent parents from driving into it to drop-off and pick-up their youngsters.

One concerned parent said that despite warnings a handful of parents have been driving into the temporary staff car park for a year since building work started to extend the school.

The parent, who wished to remain anonymous, said: 'Some parents, instead of parking a five minute walk away, are driving into the school car park which is very dangerous.

A minority of selfish parents are not following school rules and costing the school how much per day by forcing them to have a security guard to safeguard the children?

'And the school is always asking for money.'

The parent added: 'The school has done the right thing as it’s done it for the students’ safety. Quite a few parents share my opinion. It’s a disgrace and not acceptable.' The school, rated as outstanding by Ofsted, has 394 pupils.

A spokeswoman said: 'The safety and well-being of all pupils is our greatest priority, and we are grateful to the parents and carers who support us in keeping our school a safe place to be.

'We are very disappointed at having to spend valuable resources on traffic management personnel because a small minority of parents have persistently ignored our requests not to use the car park and driven in, causing congestion and safety issues, so
much so that the fire brigade was recently unable to gain access, fortunately while on a non-emergency visit.'

In a statement to parents posted on its website, it said: 'Despite repeated pleas in this newsletter, some parents have continued to exploit the car park, causing mayhem at peak times and a very significant danger to our pupils.

Staff have, on occasion, been subject to some rather nasty language when challenging unauthorised users so we will be employing an outside agent to man the gate.

'He will be instructed to only allow access to those members of staff, governors, taxis and parents who are permitted to use the car park. Everyone else will be turned away and will not be allowed in.

'We have also taken the measure of locking the car park gates adjacent to the nursery, in order to safeguard our children and prevent pupils and parents from walking through the car park.

'I am naturally regretful of the need to divert funds away from the classrooms and instead use money to employ a security guard, however the safety of our children is paramount and I cannot allow the risk of injury to continue.'

What is "dangerous" about using a car-park rather than stopping on the

    Please be specific.

One can see that it might be unpopular with those who wish to arrogate
the school car-park for their own use, but... *dangerous*?

Can you pronounce the word "hyperbole"?

Residents who live close to a school have welcomed the news that their local council is introducing a parking permit scheme. Families say the permits are needed as parents taking and collecting their children block off their driveways.

Some have even had abuse from the parents in question, it has been claimed. And one mum struggles to get her disabled children to their school transport as the bus is unable to park on Harrowby Road in Meir, Staffordshire.

It comes as parents from Sandon Primary Academy park up and down the road. But now locals have welcomed the introduction of parking permits, StokeonTrentLive reports.

Elsie Kendall, aged 66, said: "The permits are needed because of the school. You can't park if you come home because there are cars all the way up the street and there are not supposed to be.

"I think the permits will make a difference. They are £38 a year. I do not mind paying it. Janet Edwards, 69, said: "You get so much abuse from parents. They block me in. A woman effed and blinded at me and called me a 'cow' and said, 'what are you
going to do about it'? They are just too lazy to park down the road and walk up.

"I have been here 18 years. Over the years there have been at least six incidents where children have been hit by cars. The nursery even gave me two cones. But parents got out their cars and chucked them over the road.

"One day I had an appointment at the doctors at 9am. I asked a parent to move his car so I could get out. He effed and blinded at me. I was late for my appointment. I have had threats. I went up the school the other week. It is usually the younger ones
that you get the abuse from.

"They do not take any notice. They park on the zigzags. If you say anything you get loads of abuse."

Mum-of-four Sonil Ferizolli, 44, who has two disabled children, said the disabled buses which collect those two youngsters often cannot park near her house. Sonil added: "There are two buses as they go to different schools. Sometimes they cannot park
outside. People still park here despite not being able to."

Another resident, Susan Worsdale, 55, said: "I welcome the permits as I can't get on my driveway. I finish work at 2.30pm and I have to try and rush home to get on my drive before parents block it. Sometimes people park on my drive. It is unbelievable.
You get the looks. I tell them I live here. They do not seem to care. I have got a drive. I don't really need to pay for a permit.

"I have rung the school several times. They say they will have words but it just keeps happening. Last week two cars parked over my drive. I peeped and one of the women looked at me. I said, 'I want to get on my drive'."

"We live opposite the school but cannot get in and out. If you ask them to move you just get a mouthful," Katrina Hughes, 45, added. "The school has tried words but they do not listen to them. They still park there.

"I do not have a clue what can be done to stop it all. It's murder in the mornings. It is absolutely crazy. Somebody is going to end up getting seriously hurt. There is not enough car parking at the school."

The permits have been introduced by Stoke-on-Trent City Council. A spokesperson for Sandon Primary Academy was not available to comment.
