• "We need to move freely," pleads anti-LTN ranter... while walking past

From swldxer1958@gmail.com@21:1/5 to All on Thu May 25 02:13:06 2023
10 points to the first person to spot what's causing the congestion in Alan's video?

I mean, obviously the answer was going to be ULEZ and LTNs, you know the script by now. Presumably a short distance away there is a shockingly dystopian reality unfolding...

We're not quite sure the video had the effect intended, the replies now full of people pointing out walking, like Alan is so perfectly demonstrating, is one way to move about an eternally traffic-congested city... well, freely. Others suggested how much
road space the equivalent number of people would take up if using a bus or bicycles...

It's always amusing when people in cars complain about traffic, with not a hint of irony. You ARE the traffic. And stopping the ULEZ won't create less traffic. In fact, what usually reduces traffic - car use - is lots of traffic jams. Catch a bus.

If all those space-inefficient congestion-causing bathroom-sized mostly-single-occupant vehicles would be replaced by space-efficient vehicles (aka bicycles) the traffic problem would be solved. Cars don't scale well in cities. Its basic geometry.

    AN URBAN PARADISE.

Haven’t travelled much on London Underground, have you?

Overcrowded carriages, people variously coughing, sneezing, burping and farting, elbow wars for the arm rests, people treading on your feet,
blazing hot in summer, damp smelly atmosphere when it’s raining… the list of pleasures is never ending.

Then there’s the delays, breakdowns, non-availability of stock, signal failures, strikes, staff shortages…

It was so inviting that on two different morning commutes of mine, someone
    in the carriage died.

Somehow, a bit of birdsong doesn’t quite make up for it.

People who ain’t done it shouldn’t recommend it.

You should have seen post-war rationing, which was even more restricted
than that imposed during wartime. Even bread was rationed.

A rumour that ‘The fishmonger’s got fish!” could cause a stampede.

You’re so ignorant you don’t know you’re born. These are cushy times, no matter what the propagandists say.

    No need.

Car ownership is at an all-time high of 40.7 million.

    (SMMT data)

And it’s up for the third month in a row.

Germany is in recession, perhaps we could help them out by buying more of
    their cars.

Oh no! The Brexit deal that the EU agreed makes their exports more
    expensive!

What a shame, they’ll just have to suffer. There’s plenty of other countries that make cars that are not subject to EU deals.

What has happened to the Brextards "victory" over Johnny Dago?

QUOTE: Prime minister Rishi Sunak has described the UK’s new immigration figures, showing over 600,000 net migration for the year ending December 2022, as “too high”. While revised estimates from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show this
rate is actually the same as it was for the year ending June 2022, this figure is a record. ENDS

    Blood pressure alert. :-)

Only a fool is taken in by faux concern by politicians over immigration figures, as warm bodies are needed to boost the economy. Why do you think
the policies continually fail, under governments of all persuasions? They
    are all in on it.

There are 175,000 Ukrainians within that total.

They don't speak very highly of you, either.

I’ll bet a pound to a pinch of salt that his Grand European Car-Pollution Tour won’t be going anywhere near a border with Ukraine.

He does know that Belarus, an ally of Russia, has been cleared to host
    Russian tactical nuclear weapons?

And he’s aware that the Ukrainian counter-offensive is expected any day
    now?

And that if the said counteroffensive looks like obtaining significant
ground, Russia just might deploy said tactical nuclear weapons?

Try getting a Europoort to Hull ferry should that happen.
