• Paisley mum slams sentence of driver who mowed down her teenage cyclist

From swldxer1958@gmail.com@21:1/5 to All on Tue Jul 18 04:46:05 2023
A Paisley mum thinks the man that mowed down her 15-year-old son on his bike should have been given a jail sentence.

Dangerous Abdul Ibrahami pursued the teenage cyclist in a Volkswagen Touran “at speed” on April 16 last year in Paisley’s George Street.

Paisley Sheriff Court was previously shown CCTV footage which captured the horrific incident.

The footage shows the 31-year-old leave his takeaway shop in the town’s High Street and get into his car where he drives through a give way junction without giving way to other road users.

Out of control, Ibrahami then mounts the pavement in a pedestrianised area of George Street and strikes the boy on his bike. Ibrahami, of Caledonia Road in Glasgow, is then seen to seize the boy and shout at him.

Shouting and swearing can be heard on the CCTV and it also shows a member of the public stopping at the scene in their car.

Ibrahami admitted to assaulting the child by pursuing him at speed and striking him with the vehicle to his injury.

Sheriff Eoin McGinty slammed the Fazil King takeaway owner, stating: “It is extremely fortunate the boy wasn’t seriously injured or worse.

“Had he been, you’d be standing in a much higher court than this and the only question would be how many years you’d be serving, and that would likely be double figures.”

Sheriff McGinty imposed a “direct alternative to custody” ordering Ibrahami to carry out community service, banned him from driving and imposed a hefty fine.

But the 15-year-old’s mother feels the sentence was too lenient. Speaking after the sentencing, she told the Paisley Daily Express: “He should have been jailed.

“Just because he didn’t kill my son doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be given jail. This could have been so much worse than it was but thankfully it wasn’t.”

The Paisley mum also told how the horrific incident has impacted her son. She added: “That man mounted the pavement and mowed down my son. He didn’t know what he could have done to my son.

“My son was cycling for his life at that point as he chased him down that street and since then he’s not been on his bike. He has anxiety about it now and knows that on that day, that man could have killed him.

“After hitting him, Ibrahami got out of his car and was shouting and swearing at him. It’s terrifying to think what could have happened. He deserved to go to jail. But it is a relief he’s now banned from driving.”

Defence agent Mr Rose stated: “Mr Ibrahami has been blighted by low-level harassment and on this day, he accepts his frustrations caused him to act in this way. He also knows that doesn’t justify the conduct he became involved in.”

On sentencing, Sheriff McGinty said: “This is an offence that was aggravated in every way possible.

“You deliberately got in your car, you deliberately chased the boys, you deliberately mounted the pavement and you deliberately struck the boy with your car.”

Ibrahami, was ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work in the community, was placed under supervision of the social work department for 12 months and was banned from driving for 16 months.

In addition, Ibrahami was fined £1,040 and ordered to pay that in £100 monthly instalments.

On this occasion - and admittedly, judging by the report - it's hard to disagree.

Defence agent Mr Rose stated: “Mr Ibrahami has been blighted by low-level harassment and on this day, he accepts his frustrations caused him to act in this way. He also knows that doesn’t justify the conduct he became involved in.”

    So what happened?

On sentencing, Sheriff McGinty said: “This is an offence that was aggravated in every way possible.
“You deliberately got in your car, you deliberately chased the boys, you deliberately mounted the pavement and you deliberately struck the boy with your car.”
Ibrahami, was ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work in the community, was placed under supervision of the social work department for 12 months and was banned from driving for 16 months.

You seem to be saying that the boy was cycling where he shouldn’t.

I think you’re conflating Green Street and George Street.

How’s the Pedestrian Priority working out?

It doesn’t have much success, where cyclists are concerned.

Perhaps they ought to read the Highway Code…

Ten years for supposition? Note all the times ‘would be’ was used.
