A youngster was injured after being knocked from his bike when a van driver opened his door without looking.

The motorist was given an on-the-spot fine after the incident in Milford, between Church Hill and High Street, at around 8.45pm on Monday.

The 14-year-old local boy suffered minor injuries.

The incident was recounted in a Facebook post by roads policing officers as a warning to fellow motorists to adhere to guidance in the Highway Code.

It said: “The Highway Code was updated in January 2022. It now says, ‘Where people driving or passengers in a vehicle are able to do so, they should open the door using their hand on the opposite side to the door they are opening. For example, using
their left hand to open a door on their right-hand side’.

“After speaking to the injured cyclist, the driver of the van received a fixed penalty notice.

“Always check over your shoulders and check your mirrors before exiting a vehicle.”

Why didn't the "youngster" give the stationary van at least 1.5 metres clearance?

Good to see the police clamping down on the dangerous scourge of "dooring" and where the blame for any injuries lies with.
    More please!

He obviously wasn't leaving the prescribed 1.5 metres (ie, 5' 10½")
    clearance when overtaking, was he?

I think some people call it a "close pass".

The incident was recounted in a Facebook post by roads policing officers as a warning to fellow motorists to adhere to guidance in the Highway Code.

Wouldn't it be safer if those riding chav- and fairy-cycles adhered to it?

    What a load of b*******.

Unless you can quote the Act and Regulation, of course, M'Lud.

"Never pass a vehicle with less than 5' 10½" clearance"?
