A driver has been jailed after being caught by police behind the wheel while he was banned for his role in a late night high speed police chase.
Carlisle Crown Court heard Joshua Lee Baker, now 22, had been [only an unqualified chav-cyclist] since the age of 19.
In May 2022, he appeared in front of a judge after an incident in March that year. The court was shown footage of Baker leaping from a moving car and sprinting down the touchline of a rugby pitch in a bid to flee police.
Moments earlier, he had been driving a Volkswagen Golf away from an officer who had hit 90mph in a 60mph zone and also 60mph in a 30mph village.
For a number of offences, including dangerous driving, Baker had an eight-month custodial sentence suspended for 18 months, was given a two-year ban and ordered to take an extended retest.
But he was back in court last summer when, for new motoring offences which included driving while disqualified, he had a separate suspended jail term imposed by a judge who also extended the previously-imposed suspension period from 18 months to 24.
But Baker was caught behind the wheel of a vehicle once again on December 6 2023 on the Distington bypass while his partner was a passenger.
He admitted driving while disqualified and having no insurance, and appeared at the crown court today to be sentenced.
Judge Nicholas Barker heard Baker, of Buckle Avenue, Cleator Moor, had decided to drive on that occasion to make a short journey home after his partner had fallen ill.
Baker was jailed immediately for a total of 10 months and he must serve a three-year driving ban when released.
“The more you keep driving when you shouldn’t be, the longer you will go to prison. It is as simple as that,” Judge Barker told him.
