• Prospective New Laptop

From Peter Hillier-Brook@21:1/5 to All on Thu Jul 31 19:20:01 2025
    Hello All,

    I'm being tempted by an ASUS laptop - ASUS-Vivobook-M3407HA - and I'm
wondering if anyone has experience with Debian and this product? It is
supplied with Windows 11 pre-installed and I look forward to eliminating
that infection, if Debian is practical.

    Many thanks in advance.

    Wallet voting does do that.

Contact the hardware vendor, tell them you have money, tell them what
you want, tell them what you don't need and surely not want to pay for.
    Spend your money wisely.

    Many thanks in advance.

Yes, your future self will benefit most
from putting money **now** in the right place.

Doesn't really work any more. Domestic Windows is practically free to
computer builders, MS only really charges for professional and server
versions. I doubt that most vendors can actually get hold of
    Windows-free machines.

MS or the manufacturer gets paid for all the rubbishware they put on the computer, and certainly MS monetises the various data it collects from
Win10 and Win11. Telemetry, sure. Games and other stuff that used to be
thrown in are now third-party and require payment, and you can be
    certain MS takes a slice.

These days the software is more or less free to domestic users, and the
profit comes from advertising and selling data. Last time I started up
a new Windows, there were various 'privacy' options. One assured me
that if I chose not to get targeted advertisements, I'd still get
untargeted ones. I'm glad none of my other tools come with compulsory advertising.

Not quite your model listed but things close:

    https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Laptop/ASUS

    https://jonastechknowhow.com/does-asus-vivobook-support-linux/

How to you propose to buy it ? If from a shop why not make a Debian Live memory stick and boot the machine from that - you do NOT need to install but from the live environment can check out the important things that may cause trouble: screen and Wifi -- you will need to get permission from the shop and convince them that it will not harm the machine!

Only challenge I've run into is the Intel AX210 card, but that was a

No. I'll be buying on-line, sight unseen, hence my specific query about
ASUS. If there was a reliable computer vendor within 10 miles I would
obviously go and test various machines for compatibility with a Trixie
    stick, but there isn't.

Normally I would go Dell, or HP but I've picked up some negatives on
this list, hence the query about ASUS.

Not so. My last system purchased included no OS, per my request, but if I hadn't made that choice their default is linux mint...

I posted in here about it at the time (late last year), got the info from Charles Curley, who also purchased from that same outfit.

May I suggest creative use of search engines.
I experimented with the following in DuckDuckGo [NOTE quotation marks]
    "Linux" "hardware" "vendor" "uk"
    "Linux" "laptop" "vendor" "uk"
    "Linux" "hardware" "vendor" "us"
    uk site:itsfoss.com
    The first gave two hits:
    a link to a vendor.
a link to a possibly useful mailing list thread.
The last was prompted by one of the hits of one of my searches. I
mention it not for a specific hit but the variety of hits may suggest a
    useful search term.
