If good people post good subjects for polite discussion and there is no silliness from trolls (nymshifting and otherwise) then the ng survives.

However, we all saw the decline beginning as much as 20 years (or more)
ago as newsgroups began to fall to web based forums and social media.

Further, it used to be that there was little 'help' available on the
web, and little way to find it.

Nowadays there are dozens or hundreds of sites that can answer questions
    - so the old "Can someone help me with x" is often not met with help but derisive "What? Google dead where you live?"
(And yeah - I've done that too).

Newsgroups are dead for lack of critical mass of good people
participating. The older users have quit or died. Younger people are
not aware of newsgroups - and/or find them archaic in nature.

We're just too stubborn to quit them.

Also, being non-moderated, unlike some forum style groups, there is
abundant oxygen for trolls - if it is given to them by response
    (intentionally or innocently).

Sorry for the long answer - I didn't have time to write a short one.

Yes. They must be approved on-topic messages.

The few adults on this newsgroup post to other newsgroups, and when we do, we're not called trolls. Ever wonder why that is the case?

You, badgolferman, for example, and I, for another example, post to a
variety of newsgroups - but - it's only Apple newsgroups we're called
    trolls.

    Do you know why?
    I do.

The Apple zealots are viciously reactive against the truth about Apple.

    a. Tell the truth about Microsoft on a Windows group, & people agree.
    b. Same with Android groups when you tell the truth about Google.
    c. It's only Apple groups where those who say the truth are called trolls.

    So be it.

I've been on Usenet since the days when you frequented alt.home.repair,
where the Apple newsgroups have always been a divisive Usenet oddity.

For the zealots, it was always "us versus them" and "we're better'n you".

In the initial heady days of Steve Jobs when Apple was actually ahead of
the mobile phone competition, the zealots would joyfully scream out how
many apps were in the app store, for example, versus the Android selection.

    But no more...

In those initial days, the zealots would gleefully shout out how much
better their iPhone cameras were than the Android cameras. But no more.

Long ago, these zealots would happily taunt the Android users on security, zero-day bugs, and most of all, their vaunted "safety" in iPhone security.

    But no more...

The zealots would excitedly scream about their many updates by
contemptuously being scornful of the classic Android fragmentation.

    But no more...

Notice the trend - which goes a long way toward explaining why the Apple newsgroups have turned moribund while Windows & Android newsgroups prosper.

There's nothing for these zealots to tout (other than new emoji & colors).

    Apple is moribund...
There's nothing for these zealots to say to feel good about the iPhone.

And that, badgolferman, is the only reason the zealots post to this group.

What do you think about that assessment... it's been decades in the making?

    Apparently you dont understand expressions.

I post every day to Usenet, maybe dozens to scores of times a day, on a
variety of newsgroups, and specifically on all the common consumer
operating system newsgroups that I happen to work on every day.

This whole "cancel culture" that Alan Browne is the instigator on is kind
of interesting as it fits how childishly these zealots actually think.

They literally think I'm on the Apple newsgroup for their affction.
    Their appreciation.
    Their love.

The sad but revealing thing about them is they really believe that.

It makes no sense to them that I post on plenty of newsgroups, and on those
I don't seem to require this "love" they feel is the reason I post here.

So Alan Brown's *BIG IDEA* is to "cancel me out" by ignoring my posts.
And the zealots agree with this *BIG IDEA* that Alan's brain came up with.

They did the month of August, and then September & now October.
    November is coming up.

And yet, the zealot's *BIG IDEA* didn't change a thing.
    Hmmm.....

Maybe I don't post to this newsgroup just for their love after all.
    :)

Maybe I post to this newsgroup to tell the truth about Apple products.
To them, that truth about Apple products - is a troll - by definition.

So they come up with this *BIG IDEA* to cancel me out by not responding.
    Good.

That amplifies my voice even better.
I appreciate their *BIG IDEA* as much as I appreciated when Lewis left.

Less noise and more signal now.

What do you think about that assessment... it's been decades in the
    making?

You may be right, but I suspect the counter argument would be that Google/Android has finally caught up to Apple/iOS and there are no more innovations for either to set themselves apart. I don't know whether
that's true or not, but that's something I've heard here numerous times.

Well, I wasn't talking about Google vs Apple in terms of innovation.
Android kicks Apple's ass in almost every way you can possibly think of.

But that wasn't what I was trying to explain...

What I was explaining is the hypothesis that the Apple zealots who frequent these Apple newsgroups have nothing to tout about Apple products anymore.

They used to love when Android sucks and the iPhone didn't suck.
That fueled their egos like you can't believe.

Because of the kind of people these zealots are.
    They're all about attacking.

They're about us versus them (much like MAGA people are, in fact).

That "us versus them" mentality they all have means they shifted from
touting how great they thought Apple was, to how lousy they think we are.

They literallyl have *nothing* to say about Apple products that they love. Nothing.

Yet, they're exclusively a divisive culture that thrives on "us vs them".

So what they've morphed to is entire threads from Alan Browne of his
*BIG IDEA* of how they need to cancel out the people who post the truth.

    Does this make sense?

    a. Most of the posters here thrive on an "us vs them"
    b. Which used to feed their egos when Apple was actually better
    c. But now, with Apple being moribund, they have nothing to tout.

They can't do the "us vs them" on AI for example.
Nor 5G. Nor even automatic call recording. Or camera output.

Nothing. (Well, Apple developers sure can make emojis & new colors!)

The fact Apple isn't better anymore means they have nothing to tout.
    So they attack us.

Because they only post in an "us versus them" divisive nature.

Once you filter out all the trolls, there are not many regular people

but at least this one is occasionally useful

Reddit has displaced Usenet as an online forum to get help. Since it's moderated, though lightly, you don't have all the trolls messing things

trolls to disrupt things. The advertising on Reddit is annoying, but
it's the price that must be paid.

Howard Forums used to be useful for phone and carrier related questions
and comments, but so many of the groups were taken over by fanbois it
ceased to become useful, plus the organization of the sub-groups is poor.

You may be right, but I suspect the counter argument would be that Google/Android has finally caught up to Apple/iOS and there are no more innovations for either to set themselves apart. I don't know whether
that's true or not, but that's something I've heard here numerous times.

I can tout several things about the iPhone and associated devices:

    1. Satellite connectivity, iPhone 14 and greater <https://support.apple.com/en-us/101573>
    2. Apple Watch is much more capable than any of the Android watches
    3. AirPods Pro 2 can, as of a few days ago, function as a hearing aid.
That means $250 for a hearing aid that is sufficient for many people
    with minor hearing loss <https://www.apple.com/airpods-pro/hearing-health/>
    4. AirTags are much more capable than the competitors because every
iPhone or iPad can locate them by default, no app needs to be installed.

Of course there are also numerous features on Android devices that are
not available on iPhones, some of which I use on a daily basis, some of
which I use on an occasional basis. The iPhone still has a way to go to
catch up with Android devices in specific ways, though there is no
indication that Apple is interested in catching up.

Often it's hard to know when a troll leaves if you have your filters set

Between the constant trolls and the people preferring those trolls to

    Explain that

Too many factors at play to make a black and white explanation.

    A few contributing factors:

    * Other than flagship Androids, the more common ones are cheaper overall
than the non flagship Apple phones.

    * Carrier offerings. Three carriers here offer far more variety of
Androids than iPhones. I haven't dove into the discounts, but they may
    be more attractive for Android.

    * iPhone upgrade fatigue. It takes a bunch of years of iPhone model
upgrades before an upgrade looks worth it to most buyers. As an example
    of comparison:

    my iPhone 4: 4 years
my iPhone 6 Pro: 5 years
my iPhone 11 Pro: now at 5 years and I'll go at least 1, maybe 2 more
    years with it.

My SO: Still on her iPhone 7 (7 years now) with no intention of changing
    this year.

As to battery life: I changed the batt on the iPhone 6 Pro (Apple). No
sign of needing such for the iPhone 11, so far.

    Explain that

Here are some reasons that I can postulate:

    1. Android device makers tend to introduce new features at a more rapid
pace than Apple does for the iPhone. Apple meters out new features
slowly to encourage updates but many of those features are not
sufficiently attractive to warrant an upgrade.

    2. Apple removes features from their devices causing many iPhone owners
to delay upgrades because they don't want to lose features.
a)What are the best selling iPhones of all time? The 6/6+ and
6s/6s+, the last two models that had a headphone jack.

The SE (1st gen) was the last model launched with a headphone jack. Plus
was significantly cheaper than either the 6 or 6s. So why didn't it have
    the highest sales figures?

For those too behind the times to use Bluetooth headphones there are these Lightning adaptors that provide ancient headphone jack capacity. With
Bluetooth I can walk around the house untethered to my phone. Progress.

There are downsides to bluetooth. 1) you have to remember to charge them,
    2) the bluetooth can be unreliable, 3) sounds quality is worse, 4) most are disposable as battery replacement is unviable.

I have a perpetual problem where I'll be happily listening to my phone at home, but then my wife pulls into the drive in the car and then my phone automatically connects to the car. Why isn't there a way to prioritise devices?

In five years I'm on my third pair of BT earpods. In the flip side, I still have wired headphones that are decades old which work perfectly well. Progress?

I have higher quality headphones not “pods”. And they hold a charge for quite a time. Not being tethered is progress as is not using an auxillary
cable in my car. Bluetooth has been reliable for me and sound quality ok.
Again one can use an adaptor cable for the jack into headphones or aux in a
car or into RCA adaptors for a home entertainment center. I’ve done the latter, playing my phone through a cable into a home system. The loss of a headphone specific hole in the phone is a non-issue seized upon by local miscreants for their trolling agenda.
